Hi all,
It's difficult to search when you don't know what you're searching for. I would like to be able to take a shape (or shapes) for simplicity say a circle or triangle and then put a word or words inside that shape but want the word or words to be the same shape as the shape that I'm putting the word(s) into. A simple example would be a circle with the word sun in but the word sun would be stretched, shrunk, widened etc so that it filled all the space. Does that make any sense at all. Can anyone point me in the right direction for any hints, tips, tutorials, correct search terms etc please.

Re: shaped words inside shaped shapes
Don't know if there is a mesh distort extension existing but a quick search points that in scribus there is a way to use that feature with 16 nodes.

I would probably use blender to draw a plane, add the letters as a texture, subdivide and add subdivision surface modifier to the object, then distort the vertices and render the result, whenever in the need of precise reshaping of an image to another.

Re: shaped words inside shaped shapes
I had a look at your 2 links thank you Maestral, it looks very complicated and a lot above my level of experience.
Lazur URH thank you for taking the time to reply, Draw a plane, add letters as a texture, subdivide and add subdivision surface modifier to the object etc, Not for a few years yet, I'm only just starting out with Inkscape, I don't even understand the terms
Exactly like that heathenx, how is that done? I'm very new to Inkscape, there is so much to learn, I think that I might have watched some of your videos as while ago, does this process appear on one of them?

Re: shaped words inside shaped shapes
I sort of covered this in one of my videos, episode 088 (http://screencasters.heathenx.org/episode-088). I used the Bezier Envelope 2010 extension to make it work. It only takes a few minutes to squish that text into a circle. Bezier Envelope only works with 4 nodes, no more, no less. Basically you draw a circle to use as a guide and then draw a 4 corner bezier square on top of it. Stretch each segment between the nodes outward to make a circle. Make some text, convert to path, ungroup and combine the letters into one shape. Add more nodes to the text shape with the Add Nodes extension. Select your text, select your bezier shaped circle/path and apply a Bezier Envelope. The text will stretch but it's not perfect. You'll have to adjust some nodes afterward if you want it perfect.
I hate explaining how to draw things in written form. Allow me to make a quick-n-dirty screencast for you. I broke my mic a few days ago so there will not be audio. Just do what I do and you'll get it.
Download Bezier Envelope 2010 here: http://bit.ly/bdcIz9 Unzip and add the files to your extensions sub-directory.

Re: shaped words inside shaped shapes
Here's my quick'n'hacky take on it:
1) Draw a circle
2) Create the text
3) Convert the text to a path
4) Apply the "Envelope Deformation" live path effect to the text path
5) Adjust the top, bottom, left and right paths for the LPE to get the sort of distortion you want
6) Clip the text path with a copy of the circle, just because I'm too lazy to spend all day tweaking nodes to get the edges perfect
7) Optionally convert the text path to a path again in order to "fix" the LPE distortion. This makes it a bit easier to subsequently tweak the fine details of the shape.

Re: shaped words inside shaped shapes
Presumably this can be done to fill any shape by adjusting the nodes. This is brilliant, thank you both very much for the info.

ps tried the download but Firefox couldn't find the page.

Perhaps this link will work better:

Re: shaped words inside shaped shapes
Well done, Xav. Perhaps if we ever get the devs to finish the lattice deformation LPE then it might be another possibility.
@inkydinkydo
You might want to check out another tutorial of mine, episode 060 (http://screencasters.heathenx.org/episode-060). In it I illustrate how to node sculpt.

@heathenx
@BobSongs
@Xav
Thanks all, will have a go at this later today,
BobSongs thanks for link, got it this time (Firefox can be a bit off at times)
heathenx and Xav, clear explanations, precise instructions, even I, a beginner, would feel confident, many thanks.
heathenxI think there might be some people on another site who might also find this info useful, how would you feel about me linking the videos to that site?

You have the freedom to link and do just about whatever you want with those videos.
