generated eps file has wrong page size?!!

Postby bsmile » Sat Aug 11, 2012 1:40 pm

I try to use inkscape to generate an eps file for a flowchart, but unfortunately, part of the graph is cut off. Don't know what's the problem. SVG graph is attached, while eps file not allowed to be attached. Thanks for any suggestions and help!

Hi bsmile,
I'm not going to be able to look at an EPS file, so even if I dl your file and convert it.....Oh.....well sometimes I can get the file dimensions without being able to open a file. Let me see what happens....

Ok no, in this case, Properties doesn't show me the dimensions. If I knew my computer more from the technical side, or if someone can tell me where to find it, I can look up the dimensions of the new EPS file. (Win7)

But meanwhile, I did notice that just a small part of the uppermost vertical line falls outside the page border. It's possible that the drawing is being cut off at the page border. Or that the offending line is being omitted. In the EPS dialog that comes up after you click Save, it offers the options "Export area is drawing" and "Export area is page". If the problem is the page border cutting off part of the drawing, then using "Export area is drawing" should fix it. Or maybe you used "Export area is drawing" which would make the new file smaller (than the page border).

If the problem is something else, I probably can't help. But I did want to suggest that you could probably use a file sharing site, such as MediaFire, and upload the EPS there. Then if you give us a link, we can get it there. Although when I say "we" it probably won't be me who can help, since I still won't be able to open it. (Another possible host is imgh.us. They do host SVGs, and because of that, I wonder if they might host EPS, but I don't know for sure.) Anyway, just a thought :D

PS -- Maybe I can open it again in Inkscape?? Hhmm, no I guess not. I think I would need to install some extra things for Inkscape to be able to open it. Well anyway, I hope you get it worked out :D

Thanks, brynn, there are some latex stuff in the svg, that could be why you cannot get it open with inkscape (I installed textext package with it). The problem is obviously page cutoff on the right hand side (I redrew the plot to confine everything within the portrait page boundary, everything is then normal). I do save it with drawing as well as with page, neither works. When I set the canvas to draw the flowchart, I have chosen A4 landscape. So, as far as I can understand, neither should have trouble. A used-to-work trick is to go to eps file to change the dimensionality there to increase with width of the plot, but it fails this time. I tend to think it a bug with inkscape, .... how many others run across the similar issue as me, I am curious ....

It would make sense if export drawing was smaller. But export page should work. You could check Launchpad to see if there are any reported bugs. https://launchpad.net/inkscape If there is an existing bug report, you could add your support ("Does this affect you too" button). Although you'd have to register, to be able to do that.

How are you saving your EPS file? I'm finding that it works better for me to export from Inkscape as a png first, (make sure you choose to export the entire page, not the selection, it makes a difference), then I open the file in GIMP, then save as EPS in GIMP. That ought to include everything.
