Can I turn "text" into a real vector graphic?

Postby shadowdemon » Sun Dec 04, 2011 6:58 am

I'm just beginning with Inkscape. I have put together a simple Logo, and I used a special font for effect. Now if I look at the SVG on a different computer, the font is wrong. I think it's Courier or something, instead of "LCD". So I assume that the SVG file contains the text and the font name, instead of the actual vectors representing the text. But I want everyone to see the text like I do, even if they don't have that special font installed. So what is the correct way of turning the text into a real vector graphic?

OTOH, my assumption is that any recent web browser should be able to display an SVG properly. Is that the case at all? If not, then I have to turn it into a bitmap anyway. and than it does not mater anymore what font is installed on the user's computer...

Not the case. While IE9 does display some SVG images, it doesn't display them all. And to my knowledge, no browser can display every SVG image, although some are very good.

I recently answered your other questions in another topic. But I guess it wasn't your topic, and you haven't happened to have seen it. Let's see if I can find that topic and give you a link, so I don't have to repeat myself.

But meanwhile, the short answer, is to use Path menu > Object to Path on the text. If you think you might ever need to edit the text again, you should save that text on a separate but hidden layer, or somewhere outside the image border. Because after you do object to path, you can never make it editable as text again....except by retyping the text.

BRB with link :D

EDIT
Ok, here's the message: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=10785#p40052. If that info doesn't answer all your questions, please let me know which :D

For now, I think I would use raster images for websites. But I think, if MS continues and improves its support for SVG, then it won't be more than a few years, before we will begin to see SVG images start to become the new standard. (well, except for photos)
