Hey,
I was working on a logo and since it needed to be vector format, I pulled out my favorite vector editor.
Now I seem to have problems with getting that emboss on the edges.
Would what I have attached be possible in Inkscape?

Virt

Re: Need some help with embossing..
Look at the filter menu
(sorry can't launch inkscape now so I can't tell you which filter exactly you should use but it is here)

Re: Need some help with embossing..
Hey,
Thanks for reply.
Yeah I tried all these filters..
But nothing seems to really look like this.
Any other ideas?

Virt

Hard working with nodes, gradients, bluring and opacity?
Please, I'm just joking.
Just to say that it's possible to do in Inkscape. But maybe other programs do the same more easily. Some time ago, a user showed us that Xara Extreme has an especial tool just for doing that thing (The Bevel tool I think it was).

If you have problems:
1.- Post a sample (or samples) of your file please.
2.- Please check here:

3.- If you manage to solve your problem, please post here your solution.

Xara is what I am using two, but it has other problems.
Thanks for the tip.

Looks very close, what filter did you use?
Also is there a filter I can tweak and see at the same time what the effect does.
All the filters seem to apply without being able to choose any settings of the effect.
If posible, I like the white area's to be beveled and transparent.
My skills with Inkscape are not so adept, I excuse myself in advance.

Still it is how it goes, if you want to have an exact match.
Filtering can give you an automate way to add a generated bumpmap and add the shading to it.
But, it cannot provide the ability to draw a precise bump map, with sharp edges.
Like, the arrow's corners can hardly be done with inkscape's current filters as on that image.
Xara seems to have some options on that.
See square beveled shape at the bottom:

Apart these, would such bevels really work for the logo?
Re: Need some help with embossing..
I designed it myself with the filter editor.
A Filter is a "network" of graphic primitive ("blur", "color fill"...), each of those primitive has its own parameters.
So to design a filter, you need to know what are the available primitives, what are the settings of those primitives and how to link those primitives.
In current stable version of inkscape you can experiment by opening the filter designer, clicking on a primitive and start to play with its settings to try to guess what it does. Quite intimidating and frustrating when all you want to do is change the direction of light.
The unstable version is better, more filters have a live preview that allows you to play in realtime with real usefull settings (some filters could have 20 primitives * 5+ parameters = 100+ parameters when only 5 are really important)
In my exemple
to change light direction you need to modify
Diffuse lighting/azimuth
to change the strength (more light/dark)
Diffuse lighting/surface scale
to change the length of "cliffs"
morphology/radius and/or gaussian blur/radius
quite obvious, no
I started a thread with some of my experimentation with filters viewtopic.php?f=9&t=12678 and if i ever finished them one day I'll propose them to download.

Re: Need some help with embossing..
Hi All,
Thanks everyone for the replies, I know now that Inkscape right now (13/11/2013) isn't the best choice for emboss effects.
Perhaps in the near future!
Kindest regards,
Virt

Re: Need some help with embossing..
Hi Virt, I think this could be possible with some inset/outset paths and a couple of cheeky black-to-white overlay gradients. Let me know if this SVG helps you at all, I could even write a tutorial on it if you need a fuller guide.
