I'm trying to use Inkscape to replace Corel Draw 10, which won't run under Windows 7. Although I have a 64-bit OS, I'm using the 32-bit version of Inkscape as the UI of the 64-bit version is (for me) unusable. As a trial, I over-traced a bitmap part cut-away mono line drawing of a centrifugal pump and applied suitable fills. FWIW, I suspect that this is almost on the limit for my desktop machine (2 x Xeon 2.33 GHz processors and 4GB RAM with a GeForce 8400GS video card) as it was starting to get fairly slow to refresh. Interestingly, Inkscape runs much smoother under Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop (Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM). Overall, I'm very impressed with Inkscape - congrats to the developers!
Anyway, the result (exported at 150 dpi):

First Attempt
Re: First Attempt
That looks quite decent!
The highlights could be improved though. Maybe try some lighter blues for the painted parts and-or add darker blues for shading, instead of white toplights,
and also darken the shiny metal parts at places -like on the small holes for the screws.
On the right side of the pipe joint, those hole shading gradient doesn't make it look parallel to the axis of the pump.
