Are there any tutorials to show how to make a wood grain texture?

Not yet.

(Would call this one a bit outdated.)

I can't look at videos, are there any online printed tutorials for making wood grain effects?

Xav just recently posted a tutorial on the turbulence filter primitive. It's not that far away.

Like add two flood filter primitives with the grain's lightest and darkest colours, use turbulence to generate the grain pattern,
use compositing three times, and voila, there is a basic grain pattern.
Need something more complex? Add another turbulence and use it for displacement.
Need to alter the shades to add tiny details? Add more turbulence and compositing after you altered the shade by colormatrix or component transfer.

Possibilities are alot.
