[solved] creating halftone effect

Can anyone point to a good tutorial for doing a halftone effect in inkscape? I'm having a really hard time making this work. Appreciate the help.

I actually just found this: http://istarlome.deviantart.com/art/halftone-effect-in-inkscape-85648573 which I think is the same technique on a little more basic image. I used that (and several masks) to get this:
