I see this issue is addressed in a FAQ for Windows machines for older Inkscape versions but I don't know what to do in this case since I'm on a Mac. Any ideas?

If you are on Leopard: you can upgrade to Inkscape 0.47 - it has support for the user fonts in '~/Library/Fonts' added back.
If you are on Tiger or don't want to upgrade: you need to edit a font configuration file inside the Inkscape application bundle (it's a simple text file that you can either open with TextEdit or I could provide a link to download a file to replace it, whatever you prefer).
This issue has been filed in Bug #215906 in Inkscape: “User-installed fonts unavailable in 0.46-3 for OSX 10.4.11?” and is fixed in the newly released Inkscape 0.47 version.
