can not edit my file at all
can not edit my file at all
Hello
Apologies for this question I'm sure it's something simple but I've searched forum and haven't been able to figure it out.
I'm working on a really simple 1 layer text only logo. I saved it in lots of different formats but don't seem to be able to work on it when it's saved.
I'll give you as much info as I can based on searching the forum ....
My SVG file won't open unless I go into inkscape and open it from there
Then I can open it but I can not ungroup it or do anything with it other than move it around the page
nothing is locked, from what I can tell
It's such a simple logo I'm fine with just doing it again, I just want to know what I'm doing wrong so that I can adjust if need be in the future, rather than remaking it every time.
Please help Thank you! As you can probably tell I do't know much about computers

Re: can not edit my file at all
If you can upload the svg as an attachment, it might be easier to assist you.
Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1
The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Re: can not edit my file at all
That svg contains only one embedded raster image, and no vector elements.
There is not much you can do with it.
Looking at the aliased lines it seems you made parts of it in a raster program?

Re: can not edit my file at all
Ok sorry I have a complete lack of understanding about it
I was wanting to go back in and adjust the text etc. Is that not possible once you have saved it?
I made it all on inkscape using a text i have downloaded n my computer
Thanks

Re: can not edit my file at all
You downloaded the text as a png perhaps?
At least the "THE LONDON CLAYWORKS" part.
And added the "NEW ORLEANS" part with the text tool.
Typefaces are preserved as so called fonts on the computer.
If you want a vector logo, download and install the font of your choice.
(May keep in mind licensing.)
If that originally raster part was intentionally taken one by one from a source -other logo (?)-, you will need to retrace it with the autotrace option or manually with the pen tool.
Once you typed in the right parts for your logo, preferably convert the objects to paths (Shift+Ctrl+C),
ungroup the characters (Ctrl+Shift+G) and combine them together (Ctrl+K).
Then, save as inkscape svg.
Avoid saving to png.

Re: can not edit my file at all
Thank you so much for helping me with this, I appreciate it so much
I downloaded and installed the type face (no licencing issues) . I typed out all the text as the typeface showed up in the font list of inkscape.
Are you saying I should make it again then follow steps........

in order to be able to re- edit at a later date?
I can save it as a svg to edit and also export it as a pgn to use right?
Thanks

Re: can not edit my file at all
No, it's in order to ensure everyone sees exactly as you wanted it to appear.
If those all were text objects, it could not render with the same lettering on a computer that hasn't got that font installed.

Re: can not edit my file at all
Sorry I mean my original post it is all text so why can't I reopen and edit it? Maybe there is something I'm not understanding with what you told me
Re: can not edit my file at all
Sorry I'm still utterly confused. I tried looking at the manual but I can't see anything in there to help
Am I right in thinking once you have saved text you can't edit it, that doesn't seem to make sense

Re: can not edit my file at all
Your original file contained only a raster image.
Which technically is not a text, not a subset of characters aligned together.
Raster image is not a vector element, that you could edit with inkscape.
Everything you save as a raster image, no matter they once were vectors before, will make them impossible to be edited with inkscape.
Also, if you convert a text to path as suggested, you won't be able to edit it as a text.
It will remain vector though, you can edit it by it's nodes, add any kind of fill to it, do anything fancy with it.
But if you want to add new characters to it, you will have to make a new text object.

Thank you so much! I think I understand what you are saying as much as I'm ever going to!
I really appreciate you taking the time to explain it to me
Thanks again!

To download it (in case you don't know how):
Right-click > Save Image As
Be sure to put .svg on the end of the filename.
