Texture inside of text

Postby chief80 » Fri Jan 20, 2012 8:51 am

Hi. I would like to create text with a texture inside of it. Can anyone tell me how to do this?

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

Type the text, and use a pattern fill (Fill and Stroke dialog > Fill tab > blue/white diamond pattern button). Do you already have a texture or do you want to draw one? Or maybe you could use one of those native to Inkscape, although they aren't terribly exciting, lol. Just draw a quick rectangle, and click the pattern fill button. Then you can experiment with those.

Also, there are MANY tutorials around. Check my forum signature for some of them. Also Help menu > Inkscape manual > Quick Start has a bunch of tutorials. I don't remember if any use a pattern fill on text, but you could look at them to find out. Also search the internet. There are a plethora of video tuts for Inkscape, and I have no doubt you'll find some for text with a pattern fill.

Let us know how it goes :D

Thanks for the warm welcome Brynn :D I tried to do what you said with the pattern fill, but for some reason the texture became enlarged and pixelated when I inserted it into the text. It did not do this however when I put it in a square. Im not sure exactly where I am going wrong. Also, I was thinking about creating my own texture and inserting it into the text. Is it possible to to that?

Thanks for the response!

I'm not sure why the texture pattern became pixelated. Where did you get it? Since you asked about creating your own pattern, I assume that you didn't create this one. And yes, you can draw your own pattern, then use Object menu > Pattern > Object to Pattern.

You might be able to adjust the pattern that became pixelated. Although I'm not positive, since I don't know what you used. Select the text and switch to the Node tool. Then look around on the canvas for a tiny X, O, and square. These are the handles for adjusting the pattern, and they're usually around the top left corner of the page border. Or they might be with the object that you converted to a pattern (if you did that). You can grab the X with the mouse and drag it closer to the text, so you can see what you're doing. The pattern might be pixelated if you actually used a pattern in a raster format (perhaps that you found on the internet somewhere?), and if that's the case, it might be pixelated because it's been stretched out somehow. And if that's the case, the X, O and square may not be very close together. So first find the X, and then you might have to look around to find the O and square. Drag the square towards the X (hold down Ctrl key to keep it in the proper proportions) and that will shrink down the pattern.

Let us know how it goes :D
