A while back, I needed high quality vector card images for a project I was working on. To my dismay, all that was available were either of a very low quality (the free libraries) or on a commercial basis, which I found a bit overpriced.

So several months later (and a with lot more work than I initially thought) I'm proud to offer a free, open source graphics library (high quality vector playing card face images in .EPS and .SVG formats) that I hope will be useful to all of you.

These were created completely from within Inkscape, starting with an autotrace (which was of limited help) and then hand traced from source bitmaps.

A file with separate pips, backs, numbers and letters is also included for those who want to "roll their own". All cards are created at the proper poker size (with crop marks) for those who might want to print them.

The advantage of vector images is that they can be sized as large or as small as one wishes with absolutely no loss of detail. These images should be acceptable for use in just about any application (books, cakes, posters, web projects, computer programs, etc.) The images are compatible with Adobe, Illustrator, Photoshop, Corel Draw, Inkscape and other graphic editing programs.

These are free to use under an attribution type license. This means that the only price is the inclusion of the copyright information (included with the files). Please note that these are not public domain, but are completely free to use if properly attributed.

They look very good. It says there are 52 cards. I take it that you haven't done the Jokers yet.

Unlike the standard faces, which have long ago passed into the public domain, the joker and backs of most commercially sold are still under trademark.

That's why I've included some generic (but still nice looking backs) that I created from scratch and will eventually create a joker for the deck. If anyone wants to point me to some ideas or offer up a joker design in inkscape (b/w only please) I'd be more than glad to take a look and potentially include it with the set.

I forgot to mention that I've also done black/white and gray scale conversions of the card faces which are also available at the same link. Here are some rasterized images.

Feel free to spread the links to the library far and wide (via blogs, websites, other forums, etc.)

I'd love to see the maximum amount of people benefit from these.

One thing I learned here is that auto trace just isn't that great for very complex shapes like this. It has a tendency to blunt sharp points and throw jaggies into what should be smooth curves. I figured it would get me 80% of the way, but that actually turned out to be about 5% of the way.

A new small 1.1 release.

One of the single cards was wrong (QS in .svg format) - now fixed.
A small set of Zener (ESP) cards has been added.

Everything has been repackaged for easier download.

There have been a few clean up releases and the library is now at version 1.3.

I have a playing card memorization app in the iTunes app store (Memchamp, if you are interested in mnemonic techniques check it out). I will switch to using these in the next version!
