How to "toss" clipart into seamless image?

Postby bsbfrantic » Tue Jan 14, 2014 4:56 pm

I have spent hours and hours trying to figure out and looking for tutorials on how to make a seamless (repeatable) image by placing clip art on a background. For example if one side goes off the edge on the left, it continues and meets up seamlessly on the other side. I am so frustrated. Thank you in advance.

Hi bsfantic - Welcome to the Inkscape forum!!

This one is relatively easy - (don't you hate it when someone tells you that after you spent hours trying to figure it out!!)

First size your page to an even number of pixels - (for the example I used 1200 x 800 pixels.)
Size your clipart to an even fraction of your page size - (again here I used 400 x 400 pixels.)

Place your clipart with edges over the page's edge(s), (for simplicity I placed it over the upper left corner.)
1. Bring up the transform dialog.SHIFT + CTRL + M
2. With the clipart selected do a clone - CTRL + D
3. Transform (move the object the EXACT amount as it's horisontal size using the transfom dialog (here 400 Pixels),
Repeat step 2 & 3 until the clipart "spills over the right hand side of your page. The result is the green cliparts in my example.
4. Then select ALL your cliparts (original and clones) and do the transform again, this time going down the page (vertical -400 in my example)
Repeat step 4 until clipart extends beyond the bottom of the page (orange cliparts in example).

Select all clipart objects and group them. ALT + G
Draw a rectangle the EXACT same size as your page. Use the align tool SHIFT + CTRL + Aand center it on page.
Convert the rectangle to a path Shift + Ctrl + C
Select All Objects. CTRL - A

Perform Object - Clip - Set.
Voila!! You have a tileable background.

The clipart I used: http://free.clipartof.com/148-Free-Clipart-Illustrations-Of-Decorative-Botanical-Vine.svg
( You can do all the transforms in one step using tileable clones. I'll leave this to you to figure out!
To make the layout less "Tile-Like" you can offset the second and third row as you like.)

Good Luck
