The Tongue of Evil !

Postby MARSZ » Mon Jul 02, 2018 4:38 am

Hello Inkscapers,

Had a mysterious apparition on a spiro spline + powerstroke,

One end (zero width), got a "snake tongue",
a forked shape,
instead of one long endpoint. (Love having a long endpoint.)

When moving the end-node, the purple-node for shaping the point,
disappeared, and it took some time to re-appear.

After some fiddling with that stroke, I finally got a beautiful long sharp endpoint,
and the snake-tongue was gone.
Had this special effect before.

Is this a well known thingy ?

There were Inkscape warnings: Inkscape.exe 4004: Broken powerstroke point at n,nnnnnn, I wont try to add that

Suppose the special effect and the warnings are related.

I haven't used PS much, so I can't say if it's common to have the effect.

I presume the PS was added after the spiro effect? (as opposed to using the shape controls in the bezier-pen tool.)

I can say that interesting effects can occur by moving the PS handles in an arc, as opposed to perpendicular to the line (or maybe more accurately, perpendicular to the tangent of the line at the point.).

I think it's known to the developers, but I'm not sure if there's a bug report for it, tbh. - maybe making one can make the issue appear more 'official'?
You can browse Inkscape's bug tracker at https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape

Morning M,

Thanks for all the info !
Stupid thing is, cant reproduce it.
Indeed, I added the powerstroke after making the stroke with bezier tool (ctrl-shift-7).
When it happens again with ctrl-shift-7 after making the spiro spline stroke,
I will redraw the same line with bezier shape controls to see what happens.

Ah, right, there is no powerstroke in the bezier shape options, only ellipse....
Which is called "Pattern Along Path" in ctrl-shift-7.

The choices in .92.2 include:
    Triangle in = PS
    Triangle out = PS
    Ellipse = PaP
    From Clipboard = PaP
    Bend from Clipboard = PaP+Bend

Those that enjoy the long endpoint, may prefer the Triangle-in + Spiro mode. 8-)

I've seen that forked effect associated with Ellipse shape, using only corner/cusp nodes, but not with smooth nodes. Like draw a rectangular closed path with Ellipse, and only use corner/cusp nodes.

Thats it !
Had a similar problem, changed them all to cusp nodes, and Bob was my uncle.

Thanks Brynn !
