Creating a "grid" with alignment and distribution

Postby daviddoria » Fri Sep 18, 2009 5:20 am

I have 2 rows of 5 rectangles (they are all the same size). If I select all of the rectangles in the first row, I can use align + distribute to make them look nice. I can do the same thing for the bottom row. However, there is nothing specifying that I want each rectangle in the top row to be aligned with the rectangle below it. I could do this in two steps (align both rows vertically independently, then align all of the columns horizontally independently) - but even with this method, there would not be the same amount of space between the columns.

Is something like this possible in Inkscape?

Thanks,

Dave

Ah, found it: Object ->Rows and Columns

However, it seems to behave a bit weird.. If I select my 10 boxes and set "Rows: 2" , it changes "Columns:" to 3. If I then change "Columns:" to 5, it changes "Rows: " to 4 !

If set "Rows:" to 2 and then click Arrange without waiting to see what "Columns: " changes to, it works correctly and then columns changes to 5.

Am I misunderstanding something, or can someone explain what is going on?

Thanks

Dave

It works for me as expected with both Inkscape 0.46 and a current build of 0.47pre. And I could not find a similar bug reported about the 'Row and Column' dialog.
  • How did you create those 10 boxes?
  • What does the status line say when you select them all?
  • Does it happen in a new document as well?
