problems with snapping

Postby dbsears » Fri Nov 12, 2010 10:25 am

I'm new to Inkscape and I've been reading The Book of Inkscape.

My problem is with snapping from the middle of a bounding box edge. Here's what I'm doing

1. Make the snap control bar visible with View>Show/Hide>Snap Controls Bar.
2. Enable snapping with View>Snap or %.
3. Create two boxes.
4. Select the "Draw Bezier curves and straight lines" tool.
5. Select the "Create a sequence of straight line segments" mode.
6. Draw a line from near the middle of the edge of one box to the middle of the edge of the other box.

I expected this to snap but no luck. Then I looked closer at the Snap Controls Bar and saw that "Snap from and to midpoints of bounding box edges" was not enabled. But I couldn't enable it either. Only "Snap nodes or handles" and the bottom three options (Snap to the page border, Snap to grids and Snap to guides) were enabled.

Also, it was pretty hard to understand which snap controls were enabled. I finally settled on rapidly toggling with % and watching which controls changed.

Is this the right way to enable snapping from the middle of a polygon's edge?

Thanks.

Hi DBsears! You are on the right track and almost there with the snapping business. The snap controls toolbar has a snap on/off button at the top and then three sections, bounding boxes, nodes, and canvas (these are just my names for them). The top button in the bounding box and nodes sections turns the whole section on and off and when off the other buttons in the section will be grayed out. Once you turn a section on you can choose to turn off individual 'snap-to's in that section. The third section is always on and each item is independent. Or maybe it's not a section at all. :D
Hope this helps.
Your mind is what you think it is.

Got it. My problem was that I was expecting the line to snap to the object as I was drawing it. But I had to place it approximately, then select it and then it would snap to the middle of a bounding box side or corner.

Thanks.
