[solved] Text to paths - cannot use to divide two paths

Postby Grobe » Sat Jan 26, 2013 9:01 am

Hi.
Inkscape version 0.48+devel r12042

I'm not sure If I'm doing something obviously wrong or if there is an issue about the current develop version of Inkscape.

Here is what I did:
  1. Made a regular text object and wrote the letter G and made the text bold
  2. Converted the text into path.
  3. Draw a rectangle and make that to a path. It should be larger than the text path.
  4. Put the G-path directly above the rectangle.
  5. Select both paths
  6. Select Path --> Difference.
  7. Expect that the G-path will CUT through the rectangle, but nothing happens.

I suspect this to be a bug, but I just want to see if there isn't a bug after all.

Two paths. Paths operators doesn't work on those objects.

I opened your file, and before anything else, you do know that if you convert text to paths, it will be grouped, and no Boolean operations work on groups, right? Either ungroup the the former text object, or better still - don't convert it at all, the boolean ops should work on the text without doing so. Save yourself the trouble!

Off topic:
The dev versions are prone to strange behaviour, as I am sure you know.
The couple of dev versions I have on here do this operation without any problem.
The recent dev versons do have a problem with preferences getting corrupted and incompatible 'keys' files (AFAICT).
The solution for me has been:

1.Delete any custom 'keys' folder from your personal appdata/inkscape folder.
2.Then delete the prefs file as well from that folder.
3. Now it should work well, You can use the dialog from the prefs to program your own keyboard shortcuts etc. The new way that Inkscape reads and writes this file is much more compact.

BUT!!! don't open any older version of Inkscape, and if you do, definitely do not open your prefs dialog. (Even if you don't your prefs will probably become corrupted. You just have to pick and choose the version you wil be using and only have the old ones around for emergency use only.)

This is not an official Inkscape solution and I do not compile my own nor do I do any programming or modification.

If you want to see a very interesting change, try using the spacebar while typing with the text tool! Hope someone's working on that, eh?

Sorry, Pil, I see you posted the same info as I immediately after, meaning that I can't delete my post, or i would!

Your mind is what you think it is.

Thanks, you're absolutely right.

I've done this before without any hazling. It's just amazing how efficient my head is to just throw out any usable information that was ever stored in there.
I should have spotted the text "Group of 1 object...". But my eyes - they apparently won't let any usable information in to my head. No wonder why it get empty so fast

If there was a list of common question about the use of Inkscape, this would be one I assume.

But to be honest, right now I'm just glad there was a bug in my head and not in the program :o

I've noticed this too, glad you posted, never thought about that, that a group of one is still a group (had totally fogotten that was added in a prev version, I think to fix a cloning issue). I was wondering why I couldn't cut a path either, duh.
Would it work/cut ok, if after you converted the text to an object you ungrouped it? (I guess I should shut up and try it, lol).
