Not only do i love this effect (as can be seen in my previous work), but this tutorial gave me an epiphany or two (well sort of, lol).
I used to do this with blurred raster-images and always struggled with the effect, because it gave me the craziest (bug-like) effects.
Using opacity instead of lightness is a much better way for the tracing.

Nice!

May worth mentioning the same look can be reproduced by filtering too.

Similarly as described in the hatch/crosshatch topic.

Will re-check that in a minute.

Here is one of said crazy effects (with a rasterimage as the base), and i think i know why it does that. Its because i resized the canvas to image size. It doesnt happen when i use the unmodified canvas.

Hmmm, i had a look at that thread again. No idea how do it with a filter, and especially with dots...

Show us please !

Resizing the canvas means adding transformation to the (parent)layer.
It is suggested putting everything on a newly created canvas once the page is resized and maybe even nudging path nodes...
Guess that would be an important feature to have a magic button to eliminate all the unwanted transformations.
Though it would be problematic on objects other than paths.

mmmh, yeah. Its the same bug that sometimes happens when trying to make a sunburst with tiled clones. I know of that workaround.
I didnt realize its the same with the tracing option, because the result is so outrageous, lol

Why nudge a path node though ? Just wiggle it a bit ?

Trying different shapes (rounded rectangle) with size and opacity trace.

Absolutely fascinating - Are these methods written anywhere - step by step, to read? - I find videos hard to follow sometimes - the inkscape interface is slightly blurred - the pointer darting all over the place . . . :P

Hi - may I add my 2 cents? - Basic settings for the image. Then x 4. - Also found I could put a filter or whatever, on the original shape, and clones ok. -

Cannot get the radial color like the traffic light - (yet) -

Also put a bitmap on top - select both - object - clip - set - and = a fragmented photo.
