Arranging Commands in Panels

Postby Vince_B » Sun Jan 08, 2012 8:37 am

I have tried unsuccessfully to combine two commands (Transform and Fill and Stroke) into the panel area to the right of the drawing window. I may be that what I'm trying to do is not possible at present (I'm using Inkscape 0.47 on Windows XP SP3). As you can see in the screen shot below, the Transform command is already docked and the Fill and Stroke panel would easily fit below it.

However, as soon as I click and drag on the Fill and Stroke icon to drag it onto the panel, the Transform panel expands vertically so the Fill and Stroke panel will not fit below it. See the screen show below. Placing them side by side takes up too much drawing space.

Surprisingly, I could find no information at all on docking panels in the purchased .pdf manual. Is there a solution to this?

In the inkscape version i am using this can be done, although at first it seems otherwise. When you drag the dialog over to be docked, the first option it gives you is the column arrangement. Keep dragging the dialog to the upper or lower right hand corner and it should offer you the stacked arrangement. Tabbed doccking is also possible, if you drag the dialog to the center of the docked dialog. You can also reorder the dialogs by dragging, and mix tabbed stacked and columned arrangements!

I suspect druban is using at least the current stable version, and probably a development version. I don't think all of what he describes is possible with 0.47.

As I recall, with 0.47, almost all the dialogs are dockable. Certainly both F/S and Transform are dockable. It can be tricky getting them docked, though. Try dragging the 2nd dialog and dropping it in the same place you dropped the 1st one. If that doesn't work, try closing the first dialog, before trying to dock the next one. They will still be docked the next time you open them (as long as you have the proper settings in Inkscape Preferences for docking behavior).

druban and brynn, thank you for your replies.

Although you both said it was possible to stack panels vertically, initially I had a good bit of trouble doing that myself. Since, as far as I can tell, neither the free or .pdf versions of Tavmjong Bah's Inkscape manual cover this subject at all, I hope the information below will be useful to others. [I haven't tried tabbed panels yet].

The following applies to Inkscape version 0.47 running on Windows XP. It may, or may not, apply to other versions or operating systems. The primary problem with stacking panels is lack of documentation and the fact that the indicators can be very difficult to see. It is possible to stack multiple panels vertically, even when the total height is greater than the height of the Inkscape window. See in the screen shot below that there is a scroll bar to the right of the panels.

Image

Before dragging a panel that is originally floating into the panel stack, it may help to move the bottom of the existing panel(s) upwards as far as possible. To drag a panel , click the LMB over the icon to the left of the name (see the screen shot below), then drag over the panel area. What moves with the drag is an arrow cross.

Image

As you drag the arrow cross near the bottom of the existing panels, different indicators will appear below them. These indicators are horizontal black lines, a single pixel high. Depending on your display, they may be very difficult to see. Note in the screen shot below, there is no indicator in the top sub-image, there is an indicator to the right in the second sub-image, and one all the way across in the bottom sub-image. It's the indicator all the way across that you want for your panel to stack vertically. If you can't get the all the way across indicator, go ahead and accept one to the right or left. Now with the panels in columns, rather than stacked vertically, move the bottom up as far as possible and drag one below the other using the all the way across indicator.

I hope this proves helpful.

[BTW, after a little experimenting I was able to tab panels as druban described].
