Help With Printing A Guitar Template

Postby Doodlegame » Sun Mar 31, 2019 7:56 am

Hi,
Just downloaded Inkscape earlier today so sorry for being a complete noob
I'm trying to print a guitar template for a build I'm doing. I followed https://www.electricherald.com/how-to-print-guitar-templates/ this guide and got it looking right.
However, I then tried to print it off but it just printed off the area where the paper was on Inkscape and didn't print across multiple pages so I can then stick it together (mosaic it if you like).
I've attached images of the Inkscape view. It only printed out the part that was over the page.
Printer settings are default.

Thanks in advance,
Tom :) :D

This is what the Inkscape view is, the only bit that printed was the bit over the white page in the middle

You either need to scale the guitar drawing smaller, to fit the page border, or make the page border larger, to fit the drawing.

To scale the drawing, select it, then either manually scale with Ctrl and one of the scaling arrows, or Object menu > Transform > Scale. After you do that, you might need to move the drawing back inside the page border.

To change the page border to fit the drawing, select the drawing, then Document Properties > Page tab > Page Size > Custom Size > Resize page to contents

Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

After you make sure that your drawing is within page borders in inkscape, printer settings are where you do the rest of this, set it to print actual size, and tile across multiple pages, or whatever your specific printer's dialog says. Obviously you don't want to resize or shrink to fit because then you will have a very small guitar...
Every printer has different margins so pay very close attention to all the settings in the dialog box, enabling cut lines if you have that option
Your mind is what you think it is.

Did that and now it's just refusing to print..? The error light comes up when I press print. Any ideas...?

No clue. Does it have paper?

Do you see the drawing inside the page border?

@Doodlegame: Are you using the current Inkscape version? (0.92.4)

I've attached it below. It's only the body I want but I thought that if I cut it down since it was originally a .pdf it might resize the body or something. Not sure with this kinda stuff.
I guess it must be my printer maybe...? I'll attach screen grabs of the printer settings but I can't find an option for 'Print across multiple pages'... :(

Thanks man, really appreciate the help :)

Well yes, I see you have the page border fitting the drawing. So that's good.

I don't even have a printer myself, so I can't help much with setting it up. Do you want it printed at the actual size (across several sheets of paper)? Or do you just want the whole thing on one sheet of paper?

Maybe druban or someone else will have an idea what to do.

Well that's very thorough. Sorry to say we have to address these one at a time.
issue 1: Inkscape seems to default to A4 every time. In the second shot that dropdown menu says document size is A4. Try changing that to custom. Input the document size from inkscape (1358.6 x 449.9mm) if it doesn't offer it to you. Keep the zoom at 100. Right next to that is a 'print on' selector. Choose the size of paper you have. if it is 8 x10 pick that. This should change a lot of options hope they will be clear then, click on the "I" for more info on how it will print on several pages... Let me know your progress!

I took the liberty of removing all but the body and resaving the svg file as attached. The new document size is 600mm x 485mm,to eliminate any minor scaling problems from rounding
