Which version of Inkscape do you have installed? (See Inkscape menu 'Help > About Inkscape')
Sharp miters not included in the
visual bounding box drawn on-canvas for the selected objects is a known limitation in current stable Inkscape (a compromise between performance and accuracy).
Note: Resizing the page to the
drawing content had been fixed in Inkscape 0.48.x, and the resulting page size no longer cuts of the miters of sharp corners of paths with a large stroke width, but resizing the page to the
current selection still is affected by this - see also Bug #787568 "
Miter join style not taken into account when calculating object size".
The next major release (0.49) will always use a more precise method to calculate the extent of the visual bounding box (on-canvas, for bitmap export and for page resizing), and no longer cause long miters to be cut off.
