That's really impressive. It really does look like real hair. I look forward to part 2.

Thank you !
Part 2: puzzle and cut
Now we should know what kind of hairstyle we want. First, we draw the black outline-shape
and cut the lower bound with one or more basicpattern. Then we search the rigth pattern, colored it with grey and build the complete style over the shape.
It is a little bit like a puzzle.
When you`re finish double the shape mark all objekts and do Objekt > clip > set
Image

That`s it !

At what point are you having trouble? I was a unsure as I worked through the tutorial, but now I have grasped it.

Some of my failure might be a bit of language barrier... That and/or the tut feels a bit brief.

I think that was my problem.

To summerise the tutorial:
  1. Draw a horizontal line around 700px wide with a stroke of 1px using :tool_pen: .
  2. Convert the stroke to a path (Path > Stroke to Path)
  3. Add nodes (Effects > Modify Path > Add Nodes) with a segment length of 5.0.
  4. Jitter the nodes (Effects > Modify Path > Jitter nodes) with a displacement of 10 pixels.
  5. now scale the object so it's about 10 pixels wide and 150 pixels tall and yo have your section of hair.

You can obviously fiddle with those numbers a bit. When I used the effect I wanted a overall wider clump of hair so I didn't have a noticeably repeating pattern for the hair, so I added more nodes and then squished it less in the last step.

ok now THAT looks a lot better... insanely small but better. Thanks Micro. I shall proceed to the fiddle stage.

I tried and I think you should add:
6. Ctrl+L to delete needless nodes

It's essential because without this point you'll get mess instead of hair pattern after Effects->Pattern along path.

ok maybe I just need to see it... see someone do it... I can now make a tiny bit of what looks like it might be hair but that's it. How he did the hair in the render of the woman is beyond me at the moment since there is no way its only 10px wide and 150 px tall.

Frustrated... but willing to learn.

He uses the same patch of hair multiple times. Look at the last screenshot with the numbers on it - you can see the patches. And for the clump of hair on the left of that screenshot he used pattern along path.

EDIT: and don't forget that you don't have to keep the hair at 10 x 150. That's just a good ratio. You can scale it up.

Jitter the nodes (Effects > Modify Path > Jitter nodes) with a displacement of 10 pixels.

Ok on this step:
Max displacement is 5
but is shift nodes checked or unchecked
shift node handles checked or unchecked
use norm distr. checked or unchecked

Note that it probably doesn't make a significant difference if you select the wrong option here.

Arrghhh it's been a year now from the last post but I hope I'm not too late!

I couldn't get it right...this is what I get from Effect>Generate from Path>Pattern Along Path :
Image

So I tried the Path>Path Effects (single, stretched) but still doesn't look right :
Image

Another attempt with Path>Path Effects but this time with the 'single' option selected :
Image

This is the close-up of the result..I tried to edit the nodes on them but it only shows the 'skeleton form' (the red outline)..
Image

I failed in my English class so I hope these images could speak on my behalf..what did I do wrong? really need those hair....

It looks like your curved line is not a single path, but an object. You need to create that shape as a single line.

Actually it is a path, I drew it with :tool_pen: and convert it at Path>Stroke to Path.

Ok, so now I delete the nodes sot that it will look like single line, and use Path Effects>Pattern along Path :
Image

It's not stretched on the side now but the hair looks thick? BTW, I use 'single, stretched' option on the screenshot above, if I use the 'single', it just disappear entirely.

You should not have done a "Stroke to path". That's what was causing your problem originally. I don't know what your problem is now. I would follow the guide again from beginning to end.

I made a very silly mistake here  . I just found out why i coludnt get this to work..somehow I missed this important step :

We add nodes again like above. The Pattern has now 2484 nodes.

That's why I get those weird result. So everything's fine now, phew! So boys and girls, don't forget to add max nodes after you stretch the jitter nodes to get the 'basic pattern'. :D btw, thanks guys for your response :)
