I can confirm the problem in Firefox. I can also confirm that Opera does not have the same problem. I've checked the SVG and confirm that you don't see to have a hidden object here. So I suspect this is a bug with Firefox.

If you need to find a work around, I would delete objects one by one, saving the image each time and opening it Firefox to see which object causes the black block to appear (I dare say there is just one item triggering the bug). Once you know which object causes the problem you might be able to do something differently to get around it.

Convert the fonts to paths and see if that helps?

I've noticed this in some of my comics too, and I finally had time to figure out what was causing it for me today. In several of my documents, an extra `svg:flowRoot` and `svg:flowRegion` appear in the XML tree. The construct does not appear anywhere in the Inkscape editor view, and can only be seen when rendering the SVG in Firefox and in Gnome (not in Safari or Webkit). To fix:

1. Backup your .svg file
2. Open the XML editor in Inkscape (Edit -> XML Editor, or SHIFT+CTRL+X)
3. Look for an element named svg:flowRegion and delete it and its child nodes
4. Save and test in Firefox 3+

If the black square disappears, then you've hit the right node. If you're diagram is missing something, then you've deleted the wrong node ;-)

I think that this may be a bug in Inkscape. I will report it if I can isolate what action is adding that node.

Cheers,
madmaxx

Yes, it's that flowRoot/flowPara stuff. It was removed from the specs and many renderers now assume that there is some kind of path (well, there is) and they go ahead and render it with the default style (black fill, no stroke, etc.).

Ideally Inkscape will keep the flowed text feature, but move it over to the Inkscape namespace while keeping some tspan (text) shadow copies in sync. This would keep the functionality without affecting compatibility.

I encountered the same problem. To fix it, I had to delete all of the <flowRoot> tags. (Deleting just the "flowRegions"s didn't fix it for me.)
