careless user *Open path / pen tool

Postby Maestral » Fri Dec 09, 2011 6:07 am

I`m not sure how to treat this behavior but sometimes it makes pretty much trouble to me.

When I draw closed path with pen tool :tool_pen: (meaning: last click is on the starting point), in order to change curvature of lines/segments between nodes I have to convert that certain shape into the paths. But then it happens - starting and ending points are not the one point, so it makes path opened. Shape it self remains filled, but path is not closed and between 1st and last point stroke is missing.

Am I missing some settings?

*
My default settings for pen tool is just stroke, without the fill.

Hhhhm.....well when you draw something with Pen tool, it's already a path, and does not need to be converted to a path. When you say:
....in order to change curvature of lines/segments between nodes I have to convert that certain shape into the paths.

exactly what steps are you taking (tools, buttons, or menu items)?

Oh, well.... apparently I took a few steps more than needed ,)

I was sure it is like you said - pen tool produces paths, but recently I installed Gpick/color picker which uses some GTK+ libraries (and some more) when I noticed this change. Some additional .ddl`s were needed and some of those are related to Inkscape as well. After a few questions to guys who work on Gpick (since there were some issues) and fresh reinstall of both Gpick and Inkscape... I somehow adopted that routine of converting, but was still wondering  ,)

Usual steps:
pen tool :tool_pen: / draw closed path / select with edit path :tool_node: / "Convert object to path" / leads to broken path at starting point.

Apparently, I should go few steps back and discover what went wrong. Maybe you would know about easier way to find the conflict among these two, aside of removing all of dependencies and reinstall?

Interesting!
That's what I initially thought it sounded like, and that's what I tried. But I can't reproduce that. What Inkscape version are you using?

I suggest waiting for ~suv to reply. If you're using a development version of Inkscape, it might be a new bug.

Meanwhile, which settings on Pen tool control bar?

BIG DISCLAIMER

Fortunately, I`ve read again your question about Pen control bar... and then looked at the right direction. At first I thought you were asking about settings, but what caused all of this was activation of Spiro path in Pen control bar. Most probably accidental, since I`ve used Spiro just a few times and it was not recently. Must be why I missed to recognize path behavior characteristic to Spiro splines.

Sorry guys, I tend to bring some confusion onto these pages.

Sorry guys, I tend to bring some confusion onto these pages.

Not at all! This is how we learn. For example, I had no idea this would happen, using Spiro mode with the Pen tool.

I've used the Spiro mode a lot, but usually with Shape set to Triangle In. (I do silly things, like this: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=10322. Perhaps a bit childish, but it's fun for me  ) I never even considered it would be possible to use spiro mode with shape none. But if you make a closed path, and convert the cusp nodes to smooth, you can get some interesting effects! With Shape triangle in or out, you can't close a path. .....or well, you can close it, but it doesn't have the appearance of a regular path.

Anyway, I appreciate your message a lot, because now I kind of have a new toy, lol!

As discussed in an earlier forum topic (Re: doubled nodes/vertices), and later reported as “Closed Spiro Path Becomes Opened, Adds Extra Node”, this is a known 'feature' (or bug, if you prefer) of Spiro Splines (they do not have a closepath command).

Yes, it all sounds so familiar now.. but till yesterday I was digging and singing 16 tones all day long while drawing, converting, drawing, converting... Fortunately, I like blues ,)

Previously, I used Spiro splines as some guys recommended me that as a most advisable approach for creating font. But it has not lasted long enough, my usage of Spiro, and I managed to forgot how it acts when used. Maybe I`ll give it another shot, but for a while I would just enjoy ease of plain pen tool ,))

Here is something I`ve done recently...

of course, followed with the appropriate soundtrack... ,)
