Hello, I am a newbie using Inkscape, and I have to translate (from English to Spanish) the terms appearing on this PNG image for a class project:

I'm having a lot of trouble finding out how to select the text and then editing it. Any help?
Thanks!

Welcome to InkscapeForum!
The reason you can't select the text is because PNG is a raster format, and Inkscape is a vector graphics editor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vector_graphics). You'll need to either use a raster graphics editor (such as MS Paint or The GIMP), or place opaque white rectangles over the existing text, and type new text over it. However, in the places where the text appears over the bicycle spokes, that won't work (because the white rectangle will block out the spokes too). I guess if it was just the spokes, it might not be noticable, but in a couple of places, the text overlaps other parts. Also, unless the rectangle color matches exactly the background (it might not be #ffffff, but rather something very close) the rectangles might be visible.
There is another option, which is even more involved, and that's to convert the PNG to vector (SVG). After that, you'll be able to remove the old text (which will be converted to paths). Then you could add new text. There is no way to accurately reproduce the PNG with Inkscape's (or any conversion tool that I know of). Inkscape's Trace Bitmap can make probably a close approximation of the image, but there will be a bit of a learning curve.
Here's the manual info on Trace Bitmap: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Trace.html. And you can find help with the text tool there too. If you decide to stick with Inkscape, and run into any problems, please feel free to post back
