XKCD colour name survey with over 900 names in svg

Postby turquoise » Sat Mar 24, 2012 10:15 pm

hi,
XKCD.com is an online comic. The author did a survey of colour names by showing a colour and asking users to name the colour. Thousands of users responded and the results came out a while ago but did not seem to get put into svg. So here are two colour charts with the user names. The first is organized by hue vs lightness and the second is hue vs saturation. These are user names not any "official" names so many are fun and quirkish such as "macaroni and cheese" and "Kermit green" but also blue grey, grey/blue, greyish blue, grey blue, bluish grey, blue/grey, dusty blue, greyblue, bluegrey, blueygrey, and cool blue. To actually see the names the files will likely have to be downloaded to Inkscape zoom in enough. Since many of the names overlap the group which has the colour name and the colour swatch will have to be raised to the top. urls to download http://dl.dropbox.com/u/68953171/xkcd_colour_data_hl.svg

http://xkcd.com/ describes itself as "Warning: this comic occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)." The strongest language in the colour names is poo. The survey results are at http://blog.xkcd.com/2010/05/03/color-survey-results/

That very interesting, but I don't understand why they didn't make the text large enough to read at 100%. I mean if the whole point is to name the colors, it seems that the names should be readable.

Is the comic made with Inkscape?

hi,
The comic has nothing to do with Inkscape. The results of the survey are a text file with the colour code in hex then the name. I used python separately from Inkscape to create a basic svg then imported it into Inkscape to save it. The problem is there is over 900 colour swatches and each has a name so they overlap so much.
