[Bug] Can't open inkscape files without critical error

Postby bscotchshenani » Tue Jul 11, 2017 4:01 am

Heyo!

I upgraded to 92.1 last week and got my workspace all setup, migrated my preferences and bindings, etc. Things were working fine, though now I'm getting an odd error that I can't find a reference for anywhere else:

When I open an svg file from within file explorer (I'm on Windows 10), Inkscape fails to open and displays a "Inkscape encountered an internal error and will close now." dialogue.

Interestingly, if I select the exact same file by using my Recent Files list within the inkscape file menu, it opens. I can also safely open it by using the Open... option within inkscape itself.

If inkscape is already up and running on a blank document, and I then try to open the svg file from the explorer, it still does the "Inkscape encountered an internal error and will close now." dialogue, and crashes.

This happens with a file of any size. I made a test file that is just 3 circles. I can open it via my recent files list and the Open... dialogue within inkscape, but not by just double clicking it in the explorer or on the desktop.

Real weird. Any clues?

I was just examining the error your system is throwing. This error seems to be linked more to the fact there was an upgrade rather than it being Inkscape as an application.

My first choice would be an application that corrects common Windows Registry errors such as CCleaner over at filehippo.com. (You may wish to view a tutorial on how to use this application--though simple, it does touch a tender and delicate part of Windows.)

My second choice would be to simply try adding Inkscape as an option to the Windows Registry.

- Right-click the file and choose the option closely resembling "Open with...". This should bring up a dialogue box with a suggested list of software. From there I'd select Inkscape -- for testing purposes only.

- If reselecting Inkscape in the list produced the same crash, I would try this operation once more--but this time, I would use the option that resembles "Use Other Application" (again, pardon my complete lack of familiarity with Windows 10).

Windows would give me a mini version of Explorer. I would make my way to the Inkscape program folder for 0.92.1 and select "inkscape.exe". Before clicking OK, I would click the option to "Remember this application" or "Use this application", that type of thing.

Those would be my paths of choice.

When you look at the thumbnails in Windows Explorer, do the SVG files have an Inkscape icon on them? It could be that you just need to associate Inkscape to be the default program for opening SVG files. It does not happen automatically, you have to do it manually.

There are at least 2, maybe 3 ways to do that (edit - in Windows 10). The last paragraph of BobSongs message refers to one of them. I'll give the specific steps.

Right-click on any SVG file (in Windows Explorer) and choose Open With
If you see inkscape in that menu, click on it.
If you don't see inkscape there, click on Choose Default Program
Click the Browse button at the bottom-right area, and navigate to inkscape.exe in either Program Files or Program Files (x86), depending on on which version of Inkscape you installed.
Click on inkscape.exe (to highlight it)
Click Open
Now you'll be back to the Open With dialog, and this time Inkscape should be an available option. Click on Inkscape (if not already highlighted). Make sure the box is checked, which says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file"
Click OK.

Having said all that though -- if file association does not seem to be the problem, could you provide a test file for us?

*grins* Thank you, Brynn. I see you're a Windows guru too!

Thanks for tightening up the terminology: "Use Other Program..." is indeed "Choose Default Program...".
