How to move a text frame using snapping

Postby batavus » Fri Apr 12, 2019 8:36 pm

Hello,

In Inkscape 0.92, I can create a text frame by using the text tool and dragging a rectangle with the mouse button pressed. Such a frame can be aligned by snapping to grid lines (or other guides).

I know how to change the size of a text frame by moving the diamond-shaped handle in the right-bottom corner. Again, this works with snapping as well. But how to *move* the frame using snapping?

I can certainly move a text frame using the pointer tool, but snapping will align either its bounding box or the text anchor. There seems to be no way to align the frame itself while moving it.

I have found two workarounds:
(1) Create a new text frame, and copy-and-paste the text into it.
(2) Create a small rectangle that is aligned with the grid, select it together with the text frame, and move both together using snapping to align the rectangle.

But it seems like moving the text frame directly should be also possible. Is there a way?

Thanks!

a better way from the beginning is to draw a rectangle and type the text elsewhere then select the two and do Flow into frame. Your textbox is not directly editable now but follows any changes made to the rectangle, which is editable and snappable like any other rectangle. You can't rotate it though, it doesn't work whereas the flowed textbox does; it's the only time you have an advantage in using the textbox.

Flowed text is deprecated in the current SVG definition so it's unlikely to be developed further. When you're finished in Inkscape you should consider converting all flowed text to regular text to maintain compatibility with other readers.
Your mind is what you think it is.

Mmh, right, when rotating, the text leaves the frame... But you can group them together, then rotation works.

Flowed text is a useful tool even if only for use in inkscape. I wonder if someone might be motivated to fix this bug?

Maybe check with the alpha version first, flowed text has undergone some large changes (supposedly making it compatible now, even with browsers - didn't test yet). Although, tbh. flowed text is completely f*** up in my version. It ends up above the text box, the line spacing doesn't change etc. etc. ... Ouch.
