Hi
Among the four offset tools (inset, outset, dynamic, linked), two keeps a track of the source path, which make easy to re-apply or un-apply successive effects without losing the original shape.
Nevertheless it's hard to apply exact same amount of effect to cancel it for example. Also, in certain situations, catching the node to modify the offset is pretty tricky.
So why not being able to modify the offset through a meter (or a bar, a field, or any kind of digital indicator), like we do for X, Y, the opacity etc.
Thx
cya

Re: Offset meter
Hi.
In the xml editor (Shift+Ctrl+X) you can type in offset radius (in px value?).

Re: Offset meter
fkk, this forum isn't the ideal place for making feature requests. I seem to recall several requests for it, though, made in different places. I couldn't (quickly) find a bug report for this request, the closest I found was this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/170657 which is about the inset / outset steps setting. Can you browse the bug reports section some more to make sure I haven't overlooked it, and, if it doesn't exist yet, create a report for this feature request? I'd like to see that feature, too, but wouldn't know where in the UI to place those number input boxes...

Re: Offset meter
Hi
I posted here cause i found nothing on this in this forum, and this section was displaying:
I just rechecked the bug report, and blueprints and found nothing closely related. Of course there is the link you mentioned, but a solution could even include all the 4 types of offset transformations.
Where such an indicator could be placed is a good question. What would be better ? fill and stroke panel ? or maybe a distinct dedicated tool (as bezier or gradient) ? I don't know. Maybe people would be willing to give their opinion. If no solution is found, then it's too bad - but maybe the feature is not that much requested.
I'll try the Lazur method, and see if it can be easily applied to multiple objects, which can't be done through the gui (directly - the tool doesn't allow it - or indirectly - as there is no indicator to repeat same treatment to multiple objects)
Oh and btw i found a workaround for applying same linked offset to multiple text objects.
Once the first object is created and processed with wanted offset, select both source object and its offset, copy and paste them (duplicate won't work). Then one can modify the text in the copied object, the linked offset is linked to the copied object so it's ok.
Thx cya

Re: Offset meter
If you'd like to talk a bit about the UI first, you could maybe send a message to the user mailing list, to see what others could come up with (http://www.inkscape.org/mailing_lists.html). The more complete a feature request is, the easier it will be to implement - but it's not required to provide a full 'solution' Sometimes, there are hard reasons why something cannot work the way it is suggested - in that case, too many details can prevent implementation... But for placement in the UI, I can't think of many 'hard reasons' - so, if you like, go ahead, collect some more feedback I bet many will agree with you about that setting being a useful addition.

Re: Offset meter
I think this would be a good feature, too, as this is common in diecutting software. An interim workaround is to use the Paint Bucket Tool, which lets you specify offset in pixels in the tool settings.
Re: Offset meter
There's also this (rather complex) workaround here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=28230 , which works best if you need more than a single outline.
