Scale circle via path nodes porportionately

Postby 8-bit » Sat Sep 20, 2014 1:55 am

See the image below. I'm trying to scale just the inside of this gear (the circle) proportionately so that the gear itself is more narrow than it is currently. Or in other words, grow the size of the circle (or inside of gear). I've searched and fiddled to no avail.

I'm confident that this is an easy task but I am a complete newborn with Inkscape.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hi.

A possible solution:
break apart the path (Ctrl+Shift+K),
select the circle.
hold Ctrl+Shift while you drag the bounding box corner handle in object select mode (F1)
and then select both paths and combine them back together (Ctrl+K).

Go to outline mode (Ctrl+5 twice on the numpad) or lower the opacity before breaking the path apart, so that you can see the changes better.

Is this for somekind of a flag or a symbol?
Because it looks like an eclipse, and the 12 tooth of the gear can represent the zodiac.
Might be a better idea to put a white circle in the middle.

Thank you for the quick reply Lazur! I'll give this a try and report back.

I'm just trying to learn the tool. I like this SVG image due to the thick teeth of the gear. I don't have a specific use for it at the moment.

Cheers,

I do not understand the question at all I guess because Lazur did not offer you this solution, but why can't you select the four nodes of the circular path with the NODETOOL :tool_node: and scale with the corner arrows? If you do not see the corner arrows while using the nodetool there is a checkbox for it on the nodetool control bar. Hold down ctrl and shift to scale uniformly and from the center. You do not have to break a shape into components to transform parts of it with the nodetool.

It was just my solution not to use the node tool at the arrows.

Why?
Felt it an easier way on eye focusing.
Also it allows for re-adjusting to the centre if necessary with the align and distribute panel.
Me using the combine path option too much on cutting holes.
Possibly it was my mood at the moment.

I didn't expect the spanish inquisition.

Depending on which version you're using.... If I recall, druban uses a dev version, at least sometimes. In the current stable version, it's not a checkbox, as much as it's a button, with pop-up label "Show transformation handles for selected nodes". Looks like attached icon.

I haven't actually seen 0.91 yet, but all signs indicate, it won't be much longer wait: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=17769

Another approach, which doesn't require the use of the transformation handles, is to select the (probably) four nodes that make up the circle, then use ">" and "<" on the keyboard to resize (making sure the mouse pointer isn't hovering over any nodes in the drawing).
