Help using Pencil type for the calligraphy pen.

Postby jimydog000 » Sun Mar 26, 2017 12:22 am

I'm trying to do what this guy does by making the calligraphy tool act like the pencil tool. I can't figure out how to do it in Inkscape

Specifically where he does: [stoke path > stroke with a paint tool]
Thanks!

I guess you can't, vector graphics doesn't use "paint tools", but just math to draw.

I think what you're looking for is an LPE, specifically the PowerStroke LPE.

It appears the author of that video is using GIMP, which is a raster editor. Inkscape's Calligraphy tool is very different from GIMP's. That's because Inkscape is a vector graphics editor.

We still need a good page to explain the difference for newbies. But this is all I have for now: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vector_graphics

I know that! -_- ...I can't help but feel slightly offended.

You can pattern along a path in inkscape, so there's no reason why you can't emulate the pencil properties.

Thanks for showing me the powerstroke, but it's not what I want to use right now.
I'll just trace over the paths I have made in Gimp unless someone else has an answer

You do realize that :tool_calligraphic: has several options, where one of the defaults behave quite similar to the provided example?

Oops I meant the "draw bezier lines and curves" tool. My bad.

I get what the OP would like for Inkscape to do... I think that would be great.

But it doesn't yet.

PaP is close, Power stroke is close, but neither will apply the options of the calligraphic Pen to an existing path. That would be a very useful tool.
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

Indeed, but there is a workaround...

Draw the desired shape with Bezier tool. While still selected, activate the Calligraphy tool and then hold Ctrl in order to have the initial shape as a guide. It is kind of tricky to manage but it is doable.
