Spirograph extension crash frequency

Postby brynn » Thu Feb 23, 2012 8:54 pm

Hi Friends,
In the past, I've used the Spirograph extension quite a lot. It does tend to crash Inkscape more frequently than other features of Inkscape. In my experience, the crash frequency of Spriograph extension is rivalled only by filters, and only either a complex filters or multiple filters. I've recently been working with it again in 0.48.1 (Win7, 64-bit) and notice that Inkscape crashes much more frequently than it did, when I worked with it in 0.47 (WinXP, 32-bit). I don't know if it could be something about the newer version, or if using it in the 64-bit environment could be causing this? I would estimate it crashes.....I'm not sure how to quantify it.....not quite twice as frequently (times 2)....maybe times 1.75?

As a way of describing this (which I realize is entirely subjective, at least at this point) I can say that in the older version on XP/32 I could make 5 or 6 or 7 spirograms, before I could expect a crash. Approx 6 or 7 small ones, or with less than....I'd say 300 nodes; or 5 or 6 larger ones or with 300 to 1000 nodes. Now in 0.48.1 in Win7/64, it crashes after only 2 large or 3 small spirograms. To me, it's a significant difference, or I wouldn't bother mentioning.

My question is whether I should report at Launchpad? If so, are there any particular logs or other data that I could compile or provide, which would be helpful? I realize that this is quite subjective, but I'm not sure what better info I could provide. Or maybe I should contact the author of that extension (whoever it is)?

Thanks for your help :D
