so how am i doin?

Postby briangttw » Wed Nov 17, 2010 5:19 pm

just doing some more practice with using my new bamboo tablet.
looking for some words on how its going...
i think its pretty good lookin, there are some parts on shading where i know i kinda rushed, so maybe not the best it could be. but i get excited :)
you may recognize the arm from a different deviation on my profile ;) i think i might try making it look more like torn flesh instead.

Well the image is a bit disturbing to me. But what is art if it doesn't create or evoke a strong emotion, right?
I think the sketching looks good, although I am not an artist, and can't give you any technical feedback. I can say that my eye is drawn to the hands, rather than the dog, which may be your intent. The bottom right corner, which is full of the dog's head, seems a bit bare to me. And especially since you're thinking of "torn flesh" (ugh!) you might want more expression in the dog's face or eye. I guess the dog does not seem vicious, is what I'm trying to say....maybe more of a snarl, more teeth showing, and maybe a bit of a squint in or around the eyes. More so if it is a wolf rather than domestic dog. It looks more like a lab or shepard playing with a toy, than a fierce wild animal......which also may be your intent, I'm not sure. Anyway, that's my first impression. Nice work :D

ha disturbing? ok :) yeah i can always play with positioning the head. thats the wonder of vector for me, easily changing stuff around without much trouble. and i plan on adding more detail, this is just somethin i was workin on for a couple hours yesterday. i do wanna make the dog look more vicious, but i did most of this from tracing an existing image, so it'll take some practice with freehand design and my imagination to make him look more angry. a lot of work to be done still, just wanted to see if anyone else had input on technique or composition. i have mainly got into vector design because i want to try to do original artwork for stuff like band shirts. i am in a touring band and am always impressed by the designs i see with so many ideas and styles. and yes, some of them are a little "disturbing". but hey, thats metal music for ya ;)

Looks great for me, only suggestion I've got for you is to add some dripping flesh and blood splatter on the arm as you mentioned but also some flesh and blood on the dog's mouth and teeth would make it even more "disturbing".
