Attaching node to text
Attaching node to text
I am trying to make a logo and I want a line to terminate at the top of the letter d as shown in the attached .png. I'm brand new to vector graphics and inkscape, but I've enjoyed dabbling so far. The problem is that the line terminates correctly into the d in inkscape but renders differently depending on the scaling in the page. Is there a away to link the two? Thanks in advance!

Re: Attaching node to text
UPDATE: I do this all the time. I play and experiment with something and finally give up and decide to seek out an answer. Then, 30 seconds later I figure the problem out. I just decided to extend the line deep into the 'd' and bring the text back to top. Sorry for wasting space.

Hello
It's good thing that you solved the problem
However,
Inkscape have several tools to manage drawings and text. In your case, I think you coul test grouping the elements of your drawing:

At the end, my best advice is "check the manual":

If you have problems:
1.- Post a sample (or samples) of your file please.

Re: Attaching node to text
Thanks for the reply. I had tried grouping them and there was still always a gap. Is it advisable to group all elements together after one is done editing?
Re: Attaching node to text
Hi.
Grouping together objects in the svg is not that necessary as you are not really using the benefits of it more than organising your work.
But if you save it as a pdf -for printing perhaps-, groups will likely be made automatically.
I would say convert the text to path (Ctrl+Shift+C), ungroup the characters (Ctrl+Shift+G) and combine them together (Ctrl+K).
This way you can prevent issues from the different rendering of the text kerning, and is better with copy rights.
On a side note, you would need to buy the font's licence if you would use it as a text.

Re: Attaching node to text
Interesting... So you are saying that converting it is a way around buying it from monotype? Seems unfair to them, sort of. It's just courier new, which I thought was open sourced by new before I looked it up.
Also, just to check what you said, if I combine objects, as opposed to grouping them, they will always render correctly? Grouped objects is more for just manipulation? Thanks for your help. I'm getting really excited about playing more with inkscape.

Re: Attaching node to text
That routine is suggested at 99 design's contests.
Don't think it is too ethical or practical at other levels. If you are using only a font available to the public, then how can your logo be prevented from being copied?
If you want to use a font with no modifications, there are some fonts with a licence close to the public domain you can choose from here:
http://openfontlibrary.org/.
Most of the time it will work right with the combining.
There could be issues if you change some inkscape preferences with the transformations and use paths with strokes.
