Scaliness in my png images

Postby TRM » Mon Aug 25, 2014 12:59 pm

This simple little image along with a few others I have made always appears to have a scaliness in the color, I save it as a png and it looks great using win 7 image viewer or Inkscape for that matter, I even flattened the image and tried that but still when it gets to the net it shows these artifacts , any suggestions how to correct this please. Well isn't this nice, the image is not showing the effects I am explaining, just let me say it is showing up with terrible quality on facebook. Now why would that be ? This image was upped to the image host as a png

Is this the same exact image that you upload to FB? I see it is 8-bit as opposed to the 32-bit PNG that Inkscape generates (could be the image server you're using, though)

Resizing? Does FB resize the image? Say, like if you were to use it as an Avatar (no idea, I don't use FB). Resizing a PNG (or any raster format, for that matter) will always result in lost data and hence quality, best you can do is resize it to the target size in Inkscape first and then export to it.

No, the same size as here is placed on facebook. I keep the copies that Inkscape makes and then I save the file again so I can use it or upload it somewhere, I choose png and even took it to photoshop and saved it as a jpeg, it stills has a scaly appearance which of course is not showing here. I'm going to save this image and upload it and see if it too shows normal or still has an issue. It is very strange to see win 7 image viewer show it clear, then just uploading it gets distorted.

Hi.

Facebook makes a scaled down jpeg copy of uploaded images with a low compression, if they are not matching with their settings.
Maybe that's why the colours get altered.

Thanks, I was up early this morning and doing some searching and found the exact same answers, it is indeed facebook doing this, I'll try some different things to try and compensate for it.
