A wordy heading and incomplete explanations about cutting lines with a closed path have made me look into something simpler and clearer. My so-called pattern transfer example will consist of a blue rectangle, red ellipse, and the ermine pattern.
Draw a rectangle (blue)
Inside it, draw a small ellipse (red)
Fill this oval with a pattern (ermine)
The ellipse will take on the rectangle's color
Select all
Do a path > Combine
The pattern is now transferred to the rectangle, which loses its color
If it is desired to return to the ellipse, select all, CTRL-Z, click on the rectangle, delete, and the oval will reappear without color, with its pattern.

Re: pattern-transfer
are you offering advice in response to a question in some other post?
Are you telling us about some great feature you have found?
Or if you are asking for help with a project, it's not clear right now what your goal is, maybe an illustration might help.

Your mind is what you think it is.
Re: pattern-transfer
It certainly is not a great feature, but I wanted to make something a little clearer. So, I don't need any help here. Thanks.
