Hi,
I'm working with a windows, 64 bit, using is .91 for 32 bit (the 64 one caused my computer to crash).
The file I've been using was running slow but I kept on saving it periodically.
The dialogue at the bottom read my document was saved successfully. In total, this is a big file (@ 70, 000kb) and I had about 20 layers.
Finally, I opened a second file to draw one item and then transfer it. However that file crashed is, including the main file I was working on.
When I re-opened that file...nearly all my layers were gone and those that were left were empty!!!
This is not good...is there any way I can access those "saves" I was making throughout the afternoon?
(Or was I not really saving and it was just a bug telling me I was saving)...
And no , document recovery was not on...
Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Deleted Files!!!! Please Help.
Re: Deleted Files!!!! Please Help.
Hello.
Do you still have the file in your computer?
Does it still have a size of 70 000 kb?
Is your computer of 64 bits architecture?...
I don't know if there are been other reports of a 64bits build of Inkscape 0.91 crashing in a Windows (vista? 7? 8?) of 64bits.
IF you could provide more details about your system.
If you svg file still have around 70 000 kb, it means that the information is still there, but perhaps it's corrupt. Did you worked with raster images inside that file?

If you have problems:
1.- Post a sample (or samples) of your file please.
2.- Please check here:

Re: Deleted Files!!!! Please Help.
I'd examine the file in a unix/text editor. See if anything looks like SVG.
Feel free to post the file on a host, but the size might be an issue to the account bandwith... if you have a paid account or a website, it might be ok.

Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1
The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Re: Deleted Files!!!! Please Help.
Hi,
Thanks for those thoughts - I was in a bit of a panic last night.
So a couple things.
To address: I'd examine the file in a unix/text editor. See if anything looks like SVG- I really don't know what that is.
Updates:
To answer the questions, the best I can:
-Do you still have the file in your computer? Yes, but the file doesn't have "saved" work.
- Does it still have a size of 70 000 kb? No, the file shrunk to around 50,000.
- Is your computer of 64 bits architecture?... I don't know what that means, I was just informed my computer is "64 bit." How would I figure that out?
-IF you could provide more details about your system. What kind of details would help? My familiarity in these matters is limited.
-If you svg file still have around 70 000 kb, it means that the information is still there, but perhaps it's corrupt. Did you worked with raster images inside that file?
The size dropped. I did work with raster and vector based images.
Update Two: This morning a colleague was able to pull an earlier version of the file automatically backed up to a server here. Fortunately, that version contains most, although obviously not all, changes. The size of this restored file is around 80,000.
Update Three: I discovered the same issue with another file, from the same folder as the initial bad file. As before, my colleague was able to restore a nearly identical version.
While the immediate problem has been resolved (unless someone knows how to actually fix the original file...), I'd be curious to know what caused (or could have caused) the data loss. I could post the file but I'm always hesitant to do so for professional reasons. If someone wants to examine the file, tell me and I'll look into posting a link.
Again, thanks for your quick comments and suggestions!

Re: Deleted Files!!!! Please Help.
Glad, that the problem was solved!...
As a general recommendation,... You have to know your system, (or at least believe that you know it
).
Sorry If I'm being bad.
But it is what I believe.Perhaps other users can give you more specific, valuable answers.
A brainstorm:
- If your file have been reduced from 70 000 to 50 000... it means that some information has been lost, but not all. But You say that you have now a version of 80 000 kb. I think it's better to work with that version instead of trying to recover the old version... it's for a question of time. Or other users can see the way?
- What version of windows are you using?
- How old is your computer? Google it
- Windows can give you information of your system... how?... google it!
- Maybe you have a virus... how to know it?... Google it!.
- etc, etc.
- Viewing this and other topics, It's better idea to have your raster images linked instead of embedded... what I’m talking about?... Please read the Inkscape Guide.
- Could it be a bug of Inkscape?... google it
All of the above, it's only my opinion
Good luck

As far as I could experience such, usually the end is chopped off in damaged svg files -which would make it refusing to open at all.
Bottom objects -end of the file, top object, starting lines of the svg.
So if you worked at the top before the damage, those may be recovered.
(Usually if possible it's better to move embedded images to bottom, if embedded raster images are needed.)
Re: Deleted Files!!!! Please Help.
If I have done the calculation right, 80,000 kb equals a little over 78 MB. That would crash Inkscape on my computer, if I were able to open it at all. And I wouldn't be surprised if data was lost for no apparent reason. (I have only 4 gb of RAM) It seems like we've had this discussion about file size vs RAM in the past, although I couldn't point to any particular thread.
Maybe you have a computer big enough to handle this file (with Inkscape)? I seem to recall it's got a lot of RAM. Or maybe you are reaching the limits of what Inkscape can do with your system resources?
Here are some tricks to make working on a large file easier. (I think I wrote a tutorial or article or whatever, a while ago.....) If it has a lot of filters, you could use View menu > Display Mode > No Filters. Or if there aren't any filters, you could try outline view. It will help to speed things up. And with 20 layers, surely you could hide most of them while you are working. Here's that tutorial: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=12160

Hi Brynn,
I will try that...although I have played with many of those tricks before...
there's another new problem...see my new post if interested.
thanks
