Export & Image Quality

Postby nikrow » Fri Apr 26, 2013 12:59 pm

Hi :)

I am relatively new to inkscape. I have been playing around for a while and am now up to the stage where I would like to make my creations available to share. I have been creating clipart using an A4 page, though the pictures themselves are much smaller. I then click on an image and export as bitmap using the file: export bitmap path.I don't make any chances to the width, pixels or dpi, as to be really honest, I don't understand what it all means. I am really happy with the quality of the png that are produced. They look great (not pixelated or blurry) when I import them into powerpoint or publisher. However when I publish these files to pdf the pictures look terrible and blurry. Can anyone make any suggestions as to how I can produce pngs that will yield good quality images.

Thanks for your time :)

Nikki

Welcome to both Inkscape & the InkscapeForum, the official Inkscape 'users' forum, of which I'm pleased to be part of.

I will answer as best I can and others may hop in and clarify my fuzzy answer. :D

* DPI means "Dots Per Inch": the more dots, the higher the image's resolution.

So, if your image is set to 90 dpi (for example), this is an acceptable "resolution" for a webpage image. However it tends to fall short for what Publisher or Powerpoint might need. Try using a higher resolution such as 200 or 300.

* Raising the DPI may result in a larger picture when it's imported. Adding this higher DPI picture to Powerpoint or Publisher may mean resizing it, similar to how we re-size things in Inkscape. But once it fits nicely, export your page to PDF. Let us know if things improve.

When you embed raster images in a pdf, they all get jpeg compressed, which losses the quality.
If you want to put your work into pdf, which was originally vector,
don't bother exporting it into png.
All you have to do is just saving as pdf, straight in inkscape.
If you want to make pdf's with more pages, you should save each "page" as a separate pdf,
and later merge them together with the help of another program, like pdfmerge.
It's free, you can download it here:

Oh gosh, I guess I was pretty tired when I replied to that post. Next time: answer when not sleepy!

nikrow, to export a file from Inkscape to PDF, from the menus: File > Save a Copy...

Choose a name for your PDF file, and to the right of "Save file as type:" click the drop-down list and you'll see "Portable Document Format (*.pdf)".

I think in my mind I assumed there was a reason why the various PNGs were exported from Inkscape into Publisher/Powerpoint.

Hi all

Thanks for taking the time to consider my question and offer advice :)

I have created the graphics with the intention of using them in games/worksheets that I create for my students, that I make in publisher or powerpoint, which is the reason I was exporting them to png rather than as pdf. Maybe I should create these publications in inkscape and then export as pdf? Though my understanding was that inkscape isnt really made for desktop publishing...?

So as far as the graphics I am creating, their quality is fine (I export them at 300dpi), the problem actually lies with the process involved in converting publications and powerpoints containing these pngs to pdf?

Thanks again :) It really is wonderful the way people on here so generously help out!!

Cheers!

You should try pdfmerge as suggested before.
