opacity is not showing in png. file

Hi everyone.

First time poster here, have just switched to inkscape recently and am getting on great.

I have made a logo. But i wanted a gentle faded grey shadow in the background.
So i duplicate the logo, filled the duplicate black, and then reduced the duplicates opacity by around 40%.
I then lowered the duplicate to the bottom so it was under the original logo.

It looked great. I needed to save it in a .png file format so i did.
However when i open the png. file the logo and shadow is there, but the opacity is still 100% so its not faded grey, instead in the .png its a solid grey shado in the background??

What have i possibly done wrong?, it looks perfect in inkscape but no in .png ?

Id really appreciate some help :)

It's my experience that Inkscape correctly exports semi-transparent pngs.

So, when you say:
"it looks perfect in inkscape but no[t] in .png"
it probably means
"it looks perfect in inkscape but no[t] as .png in the .png viewer application I'm using"

That is, Inkscape has saved a .png. with an alpha channel, but (I guess) whatever application you're looking at the png in doesn't display the alpha channel - the opacity - correctly.

Try dragging the file to Firefox, and see if it's fine there.
