I have an idea of a new feature to guides.
I use Inkscape mostly to draw flowchart-like diagrams (chart for short) and schematics (Really nice result compared to appropriate software rasterimage export). Sometimes when I have to update a chart, I need to put an element in middle of other object. Result is that I have to manually select ang move all objects placed right to inserting position to right so that new element can be inserted.
Here is how I think this could be solved:
1: Insert a vertical guide in place where the new object shall be inserted.
2: Chose between "Move right objects to right" "Move left objects to left".
Where guide crosses a path, nodes to those paths will move.
For horisontal guide, same will apply, but up and down.
There must be a dialog box where distance is entered - OR that it moves in step corresponds with grid lines.
So, there will be almost similar to insert a row or column in a spread sheet.
Just ask If I didn't make myself clear
