Need help moving the origin of an object/group

Postby jamwaffles » Sun Apr 19, 2009 5:47 am

Hi all

I am making a glue-on layout for cutting some wood, which includes drill holes, made out of two lines and a circle. I would like to be able to center this groups origin (is this the right word?) to where the hole would be drilled.

if i, say, ask inkscape to move a drill hole mark to a hole at 50x50mm, with the middle of this group, the drill mark, centered on the hole, i cant do this because the origin of the shape is -5x-5mm away from the actual point. what i want to do is move the origin of the group into the center of the object. i dont know if i make sense here, but help would be much appreciated as this is really bugging me now

regards

james

Do you mean sort of like crosshairs? Like so: Image ?

i cant do this because the origin of the shape is -5x-5mm away from the actual point.

Why?
Well 1st, I'm not sure what you mean by "origin". What do you mean when you say "origin of the group" and "origin of the shape"? Do you mean the point where your cursor is when you begin to draw a shape? I think this is usually the center of a star, but it's one corner of a rectangle, and one point on a circle..

The group is the drill hole (circle) + drill mark (crosshair), right? And the shape is a rectangle (for example), right? I just don't get the "origin".

Just want to be sure -- don't want lead you down the wrong road, so to speak ;)

I think I understand what you are saying. Object do have an origin which you can move when you select the object twice to bring up the rotation handles. But this origin only effects rotation, scaling and skewing. It does effect the translation of the object which is always relative to the lower left corner. I suspect you want to translate a object relative to it's origin.

You might like to request this as a feature. I believe most other software let you choose between 8 points on the bounding box, and the middle, for the translation values.
