Palettes "tied" to document?

Postby linebender » Tue Aug 23, 2011 8:37 am

When I have 2+ documents open at the same time, I notice that clicking on the layers palette will often bring the other document to the front, which is throwing me; I suppose I expect the layers, objects, etc. palettes to refresh according to which document is in front.

Is there a way to change this, or is this just the way it is?

thanks!

Yeah, that can be confusing. Wait til you try to minimize a dialog (palette)! But I think that's just the way it is. And there's no way to change it that I know of.

Although now that I think about it, I'm wondering if it might be a bug? I'll try searching Launchpad, and post back if I find anything.

Oh wait! I just realized -- if you dock your dialogs, that won't happen. If they are docked, they are literally connected to the document. You can find info about docking from Help menu > Inkscape Manual.

It's only the undocked dialogs that behave like that. And it still might be a bug, that undocked dialogs don't change (refresh) according to the active document. But docking definitely solves the problem :D

EDIT
I didn't find anything in Launchpad, but might not know the proper search terms. Also note that docking in Inkscape is also called "iconify" (for some strange reason).
