EPS import problem (FAQ followed, still not working)[SOLVED]

Postby bartovan » Fri Mar 20, 2015 8:13 pm

I followed the EPS import FAQ on Inkscape.org, so I have Ghostscript installed and the PATH variables added in Windows 7 (see screenshot attached). But I still can't import EPS ("Failed to load the requested file.)
Inkscape 0.91 r13725.

Some of the errors may be old, from before I installed Ghostscript. Is the log in chronological order?
Attached also a screenshot showing the PATH variables, and the Inkscape error.

In any case the FAQ must be somewhat incomplete, since I followed it properly but still can't import EPS? Or is this to be considered a bug?

Well, there IS a way to set up Inkscape, to be able to open EPS files. When I recently updated the FAQ, since I don't need to use EPS files, and never have set up my system to open them, I just transferred the content from the old faq to the new one. I'll be glad to fix the faq, if that info isn't correct, but someone will have to tell me what to write.

That IS a ridiculously small field, for all those values! I don't know, since as I mentioned, I've never done this. It looks like you set up that path value properly. This probably doesn't matter at all. But I noticed you have a semi-colon at the end. When I look at mine, there is no semi-colon at the end. Besides that, it looks to me like you followed the instructions correctly, for that part.

Did you find ps2pdf? Or did you install it? And is that path actually the path to where Ghostscript is installed on your computer?

Beyond that, I can only suggest searching for the forum. There probably is (are?) a plethora of topics on it.

Oh, one more, probably irrelevant, comment. But who knows? Might help? I see that the file you're trying to open has a + in it. Sometimes files with non-letter-or-number characters in the name can be troublesome. I don't know if it applies to this situation, but can't hurt to change the file name. (I think only -, _, and . (dash, underline, and dots) are safe to use in file names.)

Please share the EPS file, so we can test. :)
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

I don't know if this will help you out but, I had the same issue no matter what I tried. In the end what I did was went and downloaded the LATEST Ghostscript for 64bit (I'm using windows 7) first. Now, what you have to be sure of is where the new download is putting Ghostscript in program files. The older Ghostscript for me automatically put it in Program Files (x86), the new one is just in the Program Files folder. This is really important for your path in environment variables. The second important thing I found out is in that path in environment variables delete ALL of the previous Ghostscript "stuff". All of it. That's what had me not working for some time. Than follow the link below exactly, it should work. This article is the best I've seen out there for stupid people like me. Not that you are of course :)

Solved it, the problem was that I put a space before the C:\...
Maybe add in the FAQ, for other unfortunates who might make the same mistake: "without leading or trailing spaces"? (Where it says "and then add C:\Program Files\gs\gs9.09\lib (or whatever it is on your machine)".
A semicolon completely at the end or not doesn't seem to have an influence.

While you're at it, maybe also mention that it seems good practice to remove paths to older versions of ghostscript if they would be already present in the PATH variable?

I agree by the way that the FAQ is very good. Just needed a fool like me to make it even more fool proof :)

Oh, good news!

I updated the FAQ, and I'm sure that info will be helpful for others :D
