Counting

Postby jolamoureux » Wed May 08, 2013 9:36 pm

Hello,

I was wondering if it's possible to count certain elements in a picture using Inkscape.

I have a picture of a map of my farm. On one layer, I have drawn small circles everywhere there is a trimmed ash tree growing. I would like to count the number of ash trees (i.e. circles) in the picture. Is this possible?

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

Well, I guess the easiest way would be to select all those particular circles. Then just look at the status bar and it will say how many items are selected. However, if they are too numerous to select individually.....I'm not sure. There may be some way to use the Find feature....if all the circle objects share a single trait (color, size, stroke, etc.). Please see Edit menu > Find, and Help menu > Inkscape manual > Find, for more info. Or maybe someone else will have a better idea :D

With the trees drawn as cirlces on their own layer, it's a breeze.

Open the layers tool box using Ctrl Shift L.

Each layer will have its name along with two small icons to the left of each name: an eye and a lock.

Hide every other layer other than the one with the trees by clicking the small eye icon for those layers.

Once the tree layer alone is exposed, select all the trees using Ctrl A.

At the bottom of the Inkscape application the Status Bar should indicate the number of objects selected. If the status bar was removed from view, it can be restored. From the menu bar: View > Show/Hide... > Status Bar.

Great ideas posted above.
Just to add a thought to it, I'd also 'lock' the major pic of the farm - place it in the lowest layer - go into Object, then Object Properties, then select lock, and only that object will lock. Then you can keep that layer open, it will 'act' like it's not there, meaning you can no longer select it or change it, but once you select the trees, you'll be able to see where they are physically located. It may or may not help you much, just an idea. Of course if you ever want to unlock it to make changes, you can go back to Object, scroll down and choose Unlock All.
