new install, but I can't draw anything!

Postby ten » Sat Jan 23, 2010 12:57 am

Hi,

I've gotten inkscape installed (on windows XP) but when a new document opens I can't draw anything at all, I've tried playing with settings but nothing happens. Even the zoom tool, when I click in the document, does nothing at all. However I can click on menus etc just fine (i can zoom using the zoom tool in the bottom right corner.

I'm using a wacom tablet, but there is a normal mouse plugged into my computer in the mouse port and that has exactly the same effect.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Wow! that's some pretty funky behavior. ;)

Well from your other post, it sounds like you had installation issues, so my guess is that this is stemming from something that didn't quite.... install. If you have access to another WinXP computer, install Inkscape 0.47 there and see if you get the same behavior -- if not, then we can confirm its an issue exclusive to your install, in which case the next step is reinstallation (I guess). ^^'

thanks for the reply, good to know I wasn't just missing something obvious (sort of), I don't have another xp computer to hand right now, maybe I'll try re-installing and see if that helps. I'll let you know.

It's the wacom tablet! After uninstalling and reinstalling, the same thing was happening, so I tried unplugging the tablet and suddenly the normal mouse worked fine!

But I really want to use the tablet, so....any suggestions how I can rectify this issue? I tried opening "file>input devices" but i couldnt change any of the settings (both with and without the tablet plugged in). thanks for any thoughts.

There are several topics among these forums about getting the wacom tablet to work properly with Inksacpe. I don't know if it's an Inkscape issue or Wacom issue. But in any case, I'll bet you can find a solution that works for you. Just search the forums to find those topics.

Here is a working solution (my version is Inkscape 0.48 on Windows XP): After I installed the program, everything went fine. Except (like other users observed) I could not draw anything EITHER with a mouse OR a Wacom tablet pen. What I did:
- Keep the computer on. You don't have to turn it off.
- Unplug the Wacom tablet (from a USB port)
- Restart Inkscape 0.48
- Try to draw with the mouse: WORKING! CHECKED.
- Plug the Wacom tablet back in the USB port
- Try to draw with the Wacom tablet pen: WORKING! CHECKED.
- DONE!

Good luck!

Thanks kwikdraw! Your solution worked for me, too. Now the canvas recognizes my Wacom pen when I draw on the tablet.

Next challenge: I can't figure out how to get it to recognize the stylus on the tool panels. I can select different tools but can't go deeper (e.g. to select brush size). When I open the dialogue box (File, Input device) I see a Hardware tab that includes a Test Area. I assume something needs to be done here but I don't know what. The screenshots in the Inkscape Manual are different from what I'm looking at. Anyone have advice?

Hi eyegee,
Welcome to the forum! Image

As I suggested in the earlier reply, there are already solutions existing in previous topics. Actually I believe there's a link in the FAQ topic to one of them. Here's that topic: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2037 If it doesn't address the stylus issue, there is another one somewhere that does. Please search (ie "Wacom tablet stylus") :D

I have the same problem. My mouse is a Wacom mouse that works on the Wacom pad so I can't unplug it without losing the mouse. Also I looked through the forum and did not find a solution.
I would download the books once I have tarted using Inkscape. I think it's a great idea and the program seems good! But alas I am out in the cold.
Thanks for any help!

Hi Rodlamkey,
This is a list of topics found by searching "wacom tablet"; some of them also address the stylus issue:

viewtopic.php?f=29&t=4107
viewtopic.php?f=29&t=3054
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4164
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5448
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4055
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1091
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=471
viewtopic.php?f=29&t=3870
viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1505
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1771

or it might be more convenient to search specifically for stylus issues:

1 - go to http://www.inkscapeforum.com
2 - type in the search box "wacom tablet stylus"
3 - click Search button
