A drawing can be saved as Inkscape SVG or as Plain SVG (among others). If I want to put a svg file somewhere on the web for simple browser display, should I explicitely save the drawing as Plain, or is it ok to just upload on web server the original Inkscape file ?

is there a side effect if using Inkscape SVG for a web page?
Re: is there a side effect if using Inkscape SVG for a web p
If you save as plain svg, hopefully it will be rendered the same in different browsers.
If you use inkscape svg, some parts may not appear -like flowed texts for example.
If the displaying is the main purpose, better use plain svg, and use a common font for the texts.
With inkscape svg you save some unnecessary parts for displaying online, so you can lower the file size if you use plain svg.

Note: saving as 'Plain SVG' does not magically solve the known issue with Inkscape's 'Flowed text' format.
For more information about 'Flowed text' vs 'Regular Text', please read the FAQ: “What about flowed text?“
