Hi all,

I have a file that I was working with. It was ungrouped in a second when I worked with my laptop. Poorly, my laptop dies.

However, when I move to a desktop (32GB RAM + powerful hardware), it is no longer able to ungroup that file. It crashes and is not responding.

- I can ungroup other files without any problem.
- The file is larger than 1M (so I can't attach it here) with quite many points. But it was easily ungrouped by my old laptop, why does it happen to not able to ungroup with the much more powerful desktop.
- I have tried both 0.93 and 0.94. Same problems.
- I have searched for solutions in similar topics but none of them helps.

Do you guys have any idea what I should do?

Are you saying you can open the file and work with it, adding objects etc. but it crashes only when you try to open that group?
Can you open the file, do File menu>clean up document, Save as a different name, all without getting a crash?
Did your laptop die while you were actually working on that file?
Might you possibly have a linked image in that group?

Known issue with the 0.92 series. Please use Extensions > Arrange > Deep ungroup instead to ungroup a large group.

- It gets slow to even select the image in the file. And it is not responding when ungrouping the image (group).
- I did as @druban suggested: Clean up document and save it as with a different name. All was done without any crash but when I tried to ungroup the new file, it comes not responding again.
- My laptop died due to some power / mainboard issue, I guess. So hardware problem rather than windows.
- I have no linked image in that group.

The weird thing is: Why it works with the old laptop but refuse to work with this desktop? And why it is the problem for this file (or the same type of files - I even freshly re-create the file by Matlab, but does not help)

Are you using a custom Python installation? What is your operating system?

I would suggest you completely uninstall Inkscape including support folders in Users, and reinstall the newest version. Did you at some time install a 64bit version over a 32bit version without uninstalling first? Like using msi instead of exe you might not even remember, just go into uninstall and uninstall all the inkscape you can find.
Did you install any extensions for inkscape or any other program that came in a package with python libraries?

- My OS is Win 7 - SP1 - 64bit
- I made sure to install the 64bit version of Inkscape.
- I do have a Python installed by ArcGIS and by myself (2.7). But it should be the same as in my old laptop.
- I also uninstall and reinstall from the old to the newest version. Try several times.
- I do use a support software "GPL Ghostscript" for importing the PDF and EPS. I uninstalled it and give another try, but no, it doesn't work.
- Other extension: No, I don't have.

It looks to me as if your Inkscape installation is incomplete, or uses the wrong Python folder.

To fix it, you might need to remove:

- Inkscape (completely! Including manual deletion of any remaining folders after uninstalling it - this is important.)
- Your preferences file (rename it)

Just to try a diff approach, perhaps there's a bad byte precisely where that group is located - what happens if you do a 'save as' of the entire file? Small chance, but worth a shot that it will work when that file is opened.
