Export as *.eps - Missing lines

Postby Andband » Wed Jan 12, 2011 6:11 am

]Hi guys,
I checked out Inkscape for the first time and it seems to be amazing :) . I need some graphics to import in Word afterwards and I figured that the best way to do that, is export them as eps - isn't it ?
But the problem is, that somehow the export boundaries are wrong (or maybe its me) - there are some lines missing.
E.g. : I drew a simple figure and exported it. The result looks like that:
http://www.imagebam.com/image/33d480114688182
The lower line and the line on the left side are missing.
Is there a workaround, to get the full object ? I already increased the thickness of the lines, but the problem remains...

Or is there a way to limit the export boundaries for an emf export, so that it doesn't take the whole "page" but only the area with the object
Thanks a lot
Andy

I have the same problem. Some drawings seems to be exported correctly to ps/eps, and some don't. The problem does not occur when exporting to pdf.

Hm, but how can I extract the object out of this pdf then ? I want to put that stuff in Word as a scalable graphics there ...what is the best way to do it ? It just about simple shapes... ;)

I wasn't meaning pdf is a good alternative. I just wanted to say this is a problem specific to (e)ps.

If you want to do Word, you might want to try emf or wmf. I am using inkscape for linux, so I cannot test this idea.

Welcome to both of you 8-)

I know very little about EPS or exporting EPS. But I looked at your image anyway, Andband. I'm not clear what's missing. Can you show us sort of a before and after? That said, I do understand in general what the problem is.

I don't think I will be able to open an EPS file, to test the problem. But I have tried to export (Save As) EPS. There is a dialog that comes up, and it contains several different options. Among them, Export area is drawing, Export area is Page, Limit export to object ID. Although I should say that at the moment, I'm testing with Inkscape 0.47 stable. You can find the object ID in the XML editor, I'm guessing, though there may be a way to find it on the main canvas....object properties maybe???

Also, is EPS a vector format, or raster? If it's raster, you might find PNG works much better, although I don't know what your project entails or requires. For PNG, you need to use File menu > Export Bitmap. That dialog also lets you choose what to export, and in fact allows you to choose the precise export area (custom).

Hopefully this info will help for now. And others should be along shortly to help test the problem, compare with PDF, etc. for both of you.
All best :D

Png is not scalable. I want something scalable to use in Word :)
This maybe shows a better description of my problem

Any help ? :)
I tried different exporting options for the eps export

The lower line and the line on the left side are missing.

I downloaded and looked at your image and I see a line both on the bottom and the left. Is there anything besides a right trapezoid here?

Possibilities: you were seeing the edge of the canvas (without shadow) and forgot that it doesn't show in export
or you are exporting an area other than drawing, i.e. if you are exporting 'page' and and part of your drawing is off your page. But neither of these are very likely to have escaped your attention.

I believe that Inkscape's PDF export and Eps export use the same module. PDF and Eps are essentially the same formats with a slightly different wrapper on each... (Unless things have changed drastically recently. Or unless I never understood it at all - not impossible!)

Off topic:
Incidentally, I should mention that although I am using OpenOffice and not Word, simple vector drawings - and even complex ones - simply cut and paste back and forth between Inkscape and OO - making it very easy to fine tune them to what i need. Maybe you should try this just to see what happens...
Your mind is what you think it is.

Andband, I'm getting the red x on your new image.

druban, on the original, I notice that the top line/path is wider/thicker. I was guessing that the bottom and left lines/paths are supposed to be equal in width/thickness to the top. But it's hard to say, which is why I asked for a comparison.

Png is not scalable. I want something scalable to use in Word

So then EPS must be a vector format. Sorry, as I said, I'm not terribly familiar. And it probably follows that Word doesn't accept SVG, or else you would just use it.

I agree with druban that you might have better luck with OpenOffice. However, I do very much understand that you probably can't, or don't want, at this moment, to take the time to learn a new word processor. And believe me, there is a LOT to learn with OO, coming from Word! Knowing what I know now, I would have purchased Word for my new machine.
