Hi, just joined up and a short introduction, i'm a retired plumber liveing in Havant UK which is just outside Portsmouth, Hampshire,
i downloaded inkscape about a week ago so i am very new to it and the world of "graphics" in general, i got into this as a result of model making and needing to have a go at making my own decals, it's been mostly cars but recently started my first truck since i was in my teens, the truck is a Revell Austrailian "road train" Kenworth and came with "Blue Circle southern cement" logo decals, so for the three trailers i need to make my own larger one's, i have managed to make the circle part of the decal and size it to what i want (text for the logo i am doing on "wordart" which i found easier) i do have some questions which i will try and post in the right sections so PLEASE anyone kind enough to replay bear in mind i know next to nothing about this new found "graphics" thing and excuse me if i ask what might be to you guys seem "silly questions" , my needs will be fairly simple (to you perhaps) it'll just be resizing, altering images etc, i have found some real helpfull "how to" videos but will still need to ask questions, thanks, Ian

I`m kind of passionate about cars and Inkscape, and would be glad to offer help if needed. I would also suggest to give a go to the Search box here on forum (at the very top, on the right). For starters. Most probably it would lead you to the already answered question or at least point out which chapter of Tavmjong`s Manual for Inkscape could be helpful. Cheers!

Thanks for the warm welcome Maestral, i will take your advice and search, afraid i already fell foul of makeing my first post far too long, and my search brought up nothing, sentence was either too long or wrong keywords but i'll keep trying, i'm not all that conputer literate, if it wasn't for my son working in IT i probably wouldn't have one at all, although he knows about the same as me regarding graphics, he only does networking and installs, still thanks again, Ian

Well, due to the content of your reply, perhaps you missed to spot that Manual is underlined and blue? Usually, it means that text is a link to some web page, site or similar.. so, while hoping that I`m not taking to much liberty in understanding what you wrote, I`m curios - have you checked that Manual? Was it of any help?

Hi, i have'nt checked the manual yet, i did my search (an post in help section) before reading your reply, but i definatly will be reading through it, not had much chance today, my grandson who's staying the weekend hogged the PC (till it crashed), Should i give him five across the eye's or just send him home do ya think

We've helped a whole lot of people looking to make decals, either for models, or whole cars, motorbikes, etc. And we''ll do our best to help you too. Don't worry about making long messages. I guess some people are put off by long messages. But personally, for me, the more details the better

When you search the forum, it's probably best to use just 1 or 2 words. I know that some search engines, especially internet searches, can take a logical sentence or question, and give you results that answer the question. Such as "How to draw a clock". But usually forum searches do better with 1 or 2 words, such as "clock" or "draw clock".

If you're looking for introductory info, see the info in my forum signature under "Inkscape Basics:". Although the manual is not hard to follow. I didn't have room to put it in my signature, but if you look up the Quick Start chapter of the manual, it starts with very, very basic tools and techniques, and more or less steps you up to more and more difficult things. I know a lot of people have started out with those few tutorials. And of course we're always here to help, if you get stuck

Hi again, well i had a good look through the link you gave and it really is a great manual, i added the link to my favorites bar for easy access and when i can i will buy his book, had a look but all copys were in the United States so apart form the initial cost theres the shipping charge plus i will have to pay VAT (Value Added Tax) before yey'll deliver it here, so i need to save up, being on a pension dosen't give me a lot of spare money,

Hi Brynn, thanks for the welcome, your right, i need to get my head around just useing key words, i tend to ask like i'm actually talking to someone,
I saw the basics in the manual and i think i will try some of those just to get used to inkscape, i have managed to make a logo for the trailers i'm making and only problem now is finding how to copy and past one onto a word document so i can then click on it and reproduce the number i need, as waterslide A4 sheets are £1.90 each i need to bunch the logos as close together as possible , i guess this problem is due th them being different file types,
A pal on our Hilux Surf forums resized several trailer related images for me but hes gone into hospitsal so i done want to bother him and thought i'd like to make my own, i was quite pleased with myself making this logo (with help from two Caroline Jones utube vids),
Having done that and found it all very interesting i now want to do other stuff with inkscape, My son works in IT, mainly instals and networking but by his own admission knows not very much about graphics, he did get me an old version of Illustrator cs3 but i just could not get anywhere (prob because it was a "hohhey" copy, then i downloaded Gimp2.8 which promptly went haywire and may have dad a virus in it, Simon (son) got rid of it for me, i then downloaded Inkscape and got along with this much better,

There should be no need to paste into Word. And it may not work at all, if you mean the SVG image (PNGs should paste easily). But you could have an A4 size Inkscape document, put all your decals in it, and print directly from Inkscape! (as long as you have a printer connected to the computer where you use Inkscape) (If you don't have a printer connected, you could still email your self the SVG to whatever computer has a printer.)

That's one of the "working workaround"
As popeyesurf's son is a networking wizard I'am sure he can access any printer on the network from any computer - it's quite handy!

A tip for getting the sizes of the decals right when printing; save the Inkscape layout to PDF (in addition to SVG).
Print from Acrobat reader - tick the "Actual size" radio button before printing.
( I can't get my brain around getting the sizes right when printing direct from Inkscape. )
