Changing text colour on a path

So I am trying to create circular text that is coloured. It seems I cannot do this. Is there any way to change the colour of text on a path and keep the path hidden?

Are you selecting just the text?

When using Menu: Text>Put on Path, the text and path can be selected and colored independently.
