A Logo

Postby nils » Sun Jun 26, 2011 10:23 pm

Hi Guys,

So, something different for a change: A Logo. What do you guys think?

Image

I am thinking the border probably needs some work.

I didn't create the font, it's this one: http://www.dafont.com/itsadzoke.font

I like it, though it's too large to see the entire logo on my screen. I've seen that font, and I really like it. I am wondering what a more gold-like color in place of the yellow would look like, though it might not have as much contrast as what you have now. Actually, I like the yellow contrast now that I keep looking at it. How about some sort of gradient in the black background? maybe a radial gradiant?
It's really good as is anyway!

Hi Dee,

Thanks for the feedback. Actually there is a gradient in the black. :) Uhm what resolution are you running your screen at? I scaled the pic down a lot....

I did change the pic a bit since I posted it. Current version:

I tried to give the font a bit more of a golden look, and I think it contrasts nicely with the dark blue of the background. What do you think?

Hi Nils,
Yeah, I agree, something about the border seems "off". What if you added another border stroke, but thinner? Like maybe to echo the stroke of the text? I think I prefer the first version, but with the text color of the 2nd version. But I really like the pattern you've put inside!

The pattern in the font is part of the font. ;)

I'll give the new text with old BG a shot.

For the border, you are saying I should do the same gradients as for the text? I can do that, yes. Let's see how that looks (will post tonight).

Thanks for your feedback, too!

The pattern in the font is part of the font.

When I looked at the link you provided, I didn't see that pattern. I do see one with a pattern, but it looks different to me.

Oh yes, I like that 3rd one quite a lot! Looks very professional :D

in my opinion the border orange color could do with improvement. the orange currently used doesn't seem to fit in with the rest. maybe tone it down a little?

Mmh, now colors is a difficult subject since I am colorblind. Do you mean the general orange-ey color, or the darker "shadow area" on the top half, or the lighter part on the bottom of the border?

Ok, the whole thing appears, to us blessed with color vision, as a golden color. And I'm not sure but I think I detect actually 3 different shades/colors. The bottom of the rounded rectangle appears to be a darker shade of gold than the text. More approaching orange but still a gold that's not inconsistent with the text. The top of the rectangle appears to have 2 colors. The top part of it looks just like the text. But then in the place where one would expect a shadow, appears to be a red line (or orange). And I think it's that reddish, orange line that chriswww is talking about.

I actually noticed that too, but remembering you were colorblind, and in the past had said you had help with colors (from friends) assumed that you intended it to be red, possibly as part of a color scheme for clients or something. But I can see where it would be hard to see with certain varieties of colorblindness.

If that red line were black and parially transparent, it really would make a great shadow :D
(Won't it be great when we finally get objects listed like layers?! Even without colorblindness, I lose things all the time, lol!)

This is off topic, but why can't colorblindness be corrected with colored/tinted lenses? Seems like there would be a way to filter it out.

While we're on the subject, I notice you have a new avatar, but I can't really tell what it is. Black octagon with dark blue bubbles in it maybe, or blue blob with white dots? I'm wondering if it might be a map? But maybe it could benefit by a tweak here and there, too?

i'm sometimes blind to people's nuances and sometimes (as hard as i may try) i still dont get across exactly what i mean. anyway, hope you don't miss any bits of the interface due to colors used. i just discovered how easy it is to create guidelines. i did read about it, but only recently re-discovered it. so much better than creating lines and boxes just for particular alignment purposes. i digress.
alas i can't see the svg source file anywhere here, so can't refer by id. anyway, the "orange" part of the border (the beveled ridge) that used to be solid and in latest version has become a gradient, is what i was referring to. to me that's what stands out the most from in the most part otherwise golden and black color scheme. The golden colors resemble polished bronze, but the orange border line doesn't seem to quite fit in..for me anyway..as the whole object looks carved in bronze more or less. i could be wrong.
hmm...just thinking about colors...i've never seen any graphics program interface that shows approximate color wavelength. wonder if that would be possibly any better than say RGB as a reference point.

btw monitors and operating systems, especially the uncalibrated cheapy one i'm looking at at the moment, could be skewing what i see in the picture. i'll have a look again at home on a more decent display.

I just remembered that somewhere in these forums is posted links to some color tools for colorblindness. I'm sure if you just search the whole forum for "colorblind", you could find it pretty quickly ;)

on a bigger/better monitor the orange border line is not as noticeable and actually looks quite fine. the first time i looked at it on a dell cheapie model at work (SOE issue) and it looked odd. i'll have to be much more careful making color related observations when using that monitor. so a color related issue to do with technology, and not my eyes i hope just yet.

Hmm, so is this an issue? I really can't tell and I don't have any "judges" on hand.

My intention is for the gold rim around the dark center BG to be "raised", with the light coming from straight above (upwards on your screen, not towards you the viewer in front of the screen), with the colors of the border matching that of the font at least roughly.

Screens: I have an old 20" Dell LCD that is on its way out and just servers as a secondary,it's 7 years old but it has the same panel as the Apple cinema displays of that generation (i.e. pretty decent). My primary is a rather nice 24" Samsung (at least as far as I can tell it is awesome).

Brynn, the new avatar is this: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2019&p=15589#p15567

Edit: The Samsung is a Samsung SyncMaster BX2450

Oh, I'm sorry I missed your last reply nils.

The av looks fine to me now. I do have bit of trouble sometimes, on my laptop, because I am so short, and when I have it on my lap, I can't get it pushed far enough away from me for the best view. It hits the knees.

In the logo, the red/orange line has the perfect size and placement for a shadow, but just is red/orange, instead of gray, reduced opacity black, or maybe even brown.
